Do you have a blog at Wordpress.com? Congrats! You will soon be feeding all your content to an AI, unless you opt-out. Same with Tumblr! (Why I self-host, reason ) Source: https://www.404media.co/tumblr-and-wordpress-to-sell-users-data-to-train-ai-tools/ and many more

UPDATE: Seems it already happened. Content from 2014-2023 has already been shared. So your opt-out will just be honoured going forward. If and how already sent content will be handled by the receiving 3rd party after you opt-out remains a mystery

@jwildeboer i would be very surprised if publicly scrapable data like this is not already part of the models.

Hey @tuchemnitz

@Einzigartiger @jon @tuchemnitz Wasserstoff hat sinnvolle Anwendungsfälle.

I find it fascinating how the internet portrays this place. I can't describe it, but it's just the ways japan is thought of in western media.

@scy @jendrik yeah i'd say it matches the wikipedia definitin spot on:

»Brutalist architecture […] buildings are characterised by minimalist constructions that showcase the bare building materials and structural elements over decorative design. The style commonly makes use of exposed, unpainted concrete or brick, angular geometric shapes and a predominantly monochrome colour palette […] 1/2

I hate developers...

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/29269

People are trying to get the Mastodon team to change the defaults due to the current spam attack.

The developers:

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@thor CAPTCHA?

tbh I haven't noticed the spam attack yet but I guess that just applauds to the quality of the chaos.social admins to keep things in order

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@thor i'm aware of that.
A patch can prevent similar attacks like this but why not have captcha for both open and closed registrations which admins can't toggle off via the web settings?
Because I imagine quite a few admins want their registration to be open no matter the default and then spam bots find their way back in again.
To combat automated account creation there needs to be more than having a toggle off only for new installations and many want to have it open anyway

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@thor i've read "teenager" multiple times now and since to my knowledge the person or group responsible is not known it feels pretty condescending. It's like calling people one does not like "thug".

Why should it matter if its a bored retiree or some teen preparing a science fair? Why should teens be more bored or criminal or more spammy in regards to social network attacks than others?
Let's just call it a spam wave or spammers or whatever

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@thor plus, belittering the enemies one is fighting against makes oneself look bad too. "Look how weak the UdSSR is! They are so weak! We fought head to head for decades, nearly equal in strength!" Doesn't really paint a good picture.

"A teenager hacked the distributed social media"
Doesn't make the distributed social media appear very strong when "it's just a teenager" suffices to break it.

Despite, no matter who it is it shows a relevant design/security flaw worth countering.

Just found this in some documentation.

PostgreSQL: A powerful, open-source object-relational database system.

MySQL: An open-source relational database management system.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@xanderio well they are different in size and scope…
Sometimes I need a hammer and sometimes I need a diesel rammer.

Remember that MariaDB is the successor of MySQL. It's written by the same person. MySQL is dead.

And don't forget if you need a much smaller hammer there's always SQLite.

Laughing at users doesn't really make sense in my eyes.

Talking to "nobody" was "weird" when mobile phones were invented.
Even more so when hands-free earpieces became a thing.

Now people are looking at things only they can see. It's not so much different.

I'm pretty indifferent towards Apple and the Vision Pro. Personally I think it will have the same hype and death as Google Glass. But what do I know. Surely Apple has reason to believe otherwise

    A few days ago, my groovebox, the , running the new and awesome community-built firmware, crashed, which was very cool.

    Not that it crashed, but what happened next: It displayed a colorful pattern on its pads.

    That's a stack trace. It's listing the last steps the code made before crashing. The devs have asked to be sent photos of these, to help them find bugs.

    I've pasted it on Discord, and there's a bot that recognizes these images and decodes them into addresses!

    google has unleashed ungodly AI nightmares beyond my comprehension

    so awhile ago, i've set up screen call on my android phone, because it's pretty useful for stopping robocalls from annoying me, since usually they just hang up, or google knows it is just a scam call.

    well. i got another call in, but it couldn't get the transcript. so, i played the audio back.

    to my fucking horror, GOOGLE IS USING MY OWN VOICE TO ANNOUNCE IT'S PRESENCE AS THE VIRTUAL ASSISTANT.

    nowhere, i mean fucking NOWHERE did they ever tell me this was a thing they'd do. in fact, i'm not able to find a single fucking thing about this online!

    i don't even have the fucking option set for them to preserve my voice history, the fact they have audio recordings of my voice, and enough of them to make a fucking AI-generated version of my voice, without my god damn consent, is... i don't even know how to put it.

    google, i sincerely hope someone burns down all your data centers

    saxnot,
    @saxnot@chaos.social avatar

    @hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria the second example would be the credit scoring company SCHUFA.
    They collect and process my data and generate a credit score with unknown dubious means.
    Their business model is not compatible with the ethics and moral standards which are enforced via the GDPR.
    Been a while since I looked into it but there has been an investigation if they are compliant but it keeps dragging on and the final ruling if it is legal seems to be intentionally delayed until further notice
    5/…

    saxnot,
    @saxnot@chaos.social avatar

    @hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria the data protection agency in Hesse seems to be unwilling to press against this large company.
    Perhaps one of these "I don't investigate you as long as you pay taxes here" situation.
    SCHUFA generates annual revenue above 250 mio euro each year. Big company when you're inside one of the smaller states.

    Plus there are many misconceptions being pushed willingly or unwillingly.
    Remember cookie consent buttons? Most of the time they are completely unneccessary since
    6/…

    saxnot,
    @saxnot@chaos.social avatar

    @hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria many website don't use cookies at all!
    Yet everyone knows they are annoyingy, protest by making it annoying and claiming that the law forced them. Probably many don't know any better and just copy whatever the big companys do it.

    And the same with GDPR. A story from my german personal life: every time I visit a new doctor I need to fill out a form with my personal data and what allergies etc they need to know about me. Makes sense.

    What doesn't make sense is that
    7/…

    saxnot,
    @saxnot@chaos.social avatar

    @hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria … it's also accompanied by a GDPR letter I need to sign.
    You need to show me that you comply with GDPR?
    Do you also need to show me that you are not doing any child labour, comply with fire safety etc? No.
    It's laughable. Of course you need to comply with the law.
    It's annoying on purpose. It signals "the laws are weighting us down" just like cookie banners.
    Perhaps some doctors only copy the status quo. Irrelevant.
    They are only there to create resentment.

    8/…

    saxnot,
    @saxnot@chaos.social avatar

    @hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria when I go to the supermarket and they video tape me and register my data at checkout etc do I need to sign a GDPR permission slip? Of course not.
    They are processing my data and have no interest in whining about any laws

    Is it expensive and uncool to protect data?
    Yes.
    Is it expensive and uncool to stop child labour?
    Yes.
    Is it expensive and uncool to have fire protection measures?
    Yes.

    The laws are not for monetary gain but to make our country BETTER for all of us
    9/…

    saxnot,
    @saxnot@chaos.social avatar

    @hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria I hope my long toot chain was not too much / annoying
    Having been a privacy and digital sovereignty activists for years means this topic is very close to my heart

    Has the EU become less strict in enforcing the GDPR? From my perspective, no.
    The GDPR has a lot of holes to fix and needs to be expanded.
    Many powerful companies have no interest in these protection laws. For example Volkswagen or Google both lobby for less consumer protection.
    I think overall it works.
    10/10

    saxnot,
    @saxnot@chaos.social avatar

    @hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria doesn't the USA have something similar to the GDPR?

    saxnot,
    @saxnot@chaos.social avatar

    @feld @EeveeEuphoria @hazelnot i'm not on your continent but to me it sometimes seems there are two states: California and Jesusland.

    I don't want to sound harsh but to an friend who immigrated from the US to my german city I always tell that it was quite beneficial for europe to drop all the religious nutcases, scammers and whackos to the colonies and then forgetting about them fur hundrets or years.
    We don't have as many religions / cults / systematic scams as the US does. Not even close.

    @Daojoan immediately makes you look unserious.

    It's a bit like: when I see graffiti done in a non-artful manner in dirty parts of town it's bad almost by association. Assume those words are "Rolex".
    Doesn't matter if I have heard of it when it's annoying, rude and dirty every time I see it I associate with it.

    Same reason you pull away your sponsorship of a celeb when they fall from grace: beeing associated with trash makes you trash.
