Purchases I would have never made at age 20: Ear curette for ear wax removal. They advise you against putting anything in your ear. But when I lived in the Philippines, an ENT used such a tool on me to remove earwax. If I'm careful with it, I can do the same, and I'll never have to buy a box of Q-tips again. I bet it's better than Q-tips too, because it scoops instead of smearing, and doesn't soak up any natural oils.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@thor afaik qtips don't belong in the ear.
The ear wax gets compressed instead of being removed.

Quite honestly I am not sure what is the best option. I am seeking for a better option myself. I would be very glad if some doctor/study could give me a definitive answer.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@thor As of now I clean my ears by using the jet setting on my shower head. I avoid to put fingers/qtips in my ears (and sometimes fail at that).
The water jet feels similar to what the ear doctor once did to me (not necessary an indication that it's the same procedure and/or the needed cleaning procedure).
I don't really have any problems.
When using a qtip the ears definitely feel cleaner (but perhaps that overly clean feeling is a bad thing??)

@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@thor I don't know what's the correct way.
Perhaps you or someone else knows better.

Your ear curette seems promising

google has unleashed ungodly AI nightmares beyond my comprehension

so awhile ago, i've set up screen call on my android phone, because it's pretty useful for stopping robocalls from annoying me, since usually they just hang up, or google knows it is just a scam call.

well. i got another call in, but it couldn't get the transcript. so, i played the audio back.

to my fucking horror, GOOGLE IS USING MY OWN VOICE TO ANNOUNCE IT'S PRESENCE AS THE VIRTUAL ASSISTANT.

nowhere, i mean fucking NOWHERE did they ever tell me this was a thing they'd do. in fact, i'm not able to find a single fucking thing about this online!

i don't even have the fucking option set for them to preserve my voice history, the fact they have audio recordings of my voice, and enough of them to make a fucking AI-generated version of my voice, without my god damn consent, is... i don't even know how to put it.

google, i sincerely hope someone burns down all your data centers

@EeveeEuphoria this is a horrible situation. Horrible.

But the last paragraph really got me since I'm a EU citizen I had this moment of
acdc yeah scream
mlg sunglasses fading into my profile pic

Not sure how to describe that emotion. Perhaps smug feeling of superiority? The colonies burning in AI armageddon and all the useful/helpful things being imported later.
Of course not everything is swell over here.
But at least SOME laws resemble serenity/fairness.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria the GDPR has always been a good first step. A step in the right direction but overall only a small step.

There always have been multiple weaknesses with the GDPR or DSGVO how it's called in my country.
From the top of my head: Ideally you only collect and process data when you need it for something / have an important reason. Not sure? Just say "ads" or "maybe ads in the future" and it's legal! This makes the need-to-know clause completely irrelevant

1/…

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria Ireland has always been a weak spot in regards to GDPR.
They are willing to be incompetent / overworked on purpose. Big tech moved to ireland. Nice taxes for ireland and lenient enforcement for big tech.

Many countries use the 4 % fine clause to milk companies like Google or Facebook. Lining their pockets by regularely getting millions from tech companies. Not even interested in them ever fixing the underlying Problem.

2/…

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria i'm the last to support harmful practices by big tech companies but being being beaten for protection money by gouverments like France just is not fair to Facebook or Google either.
"You can harm our citizens as long as we get a cut" is not a great message.

My collegues from Digitalcourage and I have a close eye on GDPR and its developments.
Overall GDPR is a major success.
But of course many are not willing to fund it / see no point in it / subvert it like above

3/…

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria i don't want to drag this til infinity.
Perhaps two examples from germany is how @ulrichkelber who studied CS and worked for a software company did a great job as commissioner for data protection. He enforced the GDPR within the state and supervised the other sub-agencies with the same job. Since 07.01. his term time is up and within six months a successor needs to be found.
His currently discusses replacement does not seem to be as competent or motivated as him.
4/…

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria the second example would be the credit scoring company SCHUFA.
They collect and process my data and generate a credit score with unknown dubious means.
Their business model is not compatible with the ethics and moral standards which are enforced via the GDPR.
Been a while since I looked into it but there has been an investigation if they are compliant but it keeps dragging on and the final ruling if it is legal seems to be intentionally delayed until further notice
5/…

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@hazelnot @EeveeEuphoria the data protection agency in Hesse seems to be unwilling to press against this large company.
Perhaps one of these "I don't investigate you as long as you pay taxes here" situation.
SCHUFA generates annual revenue above 250 mio euro each year. Big company when you're inside one of the smaller states.

Plus there are many misconceptions being pushed willingly or unwillingly.
Remember cookie consent buttons? Most of the time they are completely unneccessary since

There is a lot of harry potter fan fiction.

Given the quality of the JK Rowling written books I am convinced that there is fan fiction of much higher quality than the books.

Probably lots of it. And a lot of it leagues better than the inspiration.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

I know Harry Potter.
I have read some of the books.
I have seen all movies.
I am aware of it being one of the largest franchises in the world.

I'm not really a fan.
Even though I am playing in real life for years and had a Quidditch presentation on .
We're renaming ourself to Quadball.
Big reason is JKR just sucks as a human.
Big reason is that Warner Bros has good lawyers and nothing happened... YET.

With every rulebook update we get more professional and less HP-related.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

This sort of derailed from "my opinion on HP" to "I love Quidditch and I like to play it".

In my bubble we like to joke that sadly the author of the HP books was never identified and there is no author.

Even in childhood with my naive childish ways the magic seemed arbitrary and deus ex machina.

JKR knows you need to introduce a spell/device a few chapters prior. So she does. And you always know "ah this be used later". It's extremely formulaic.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

My mother never grasped why I disliked the harry potter magic system.
She (and many others) told me it's made up and not real.

I (still) tell people that I am very okay with arbitrary new rules and ideas inside a franchise. That's what makes Fantasy, SciFi and many others so interesting.
But when you have these rules you gotta follow them. Or at least have a reason why Dumbledore can do wandless teleportation despite "he's brilliant at magic" and others can't do it.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

And perhaps have other people proofread early on…

You can expelliarmus a high-level deatheater? And none of these people have the ability to magically or physically block it?
Wii remote strap? Glue the wand to a glove and wear that?

Being disarmed by a literal child as a powerful wizard is both anti-climactic and indicates all magic users being brain dead and living in a brain dead world.

And yes I know the idea that a single muggle with a hand gun could overtake the whole wizarding world.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

According to the wiki Voldemort used the killing curse (Avada Kedavra) on Harry.

It can't be reflected or rebound or evaded.

Except of course for the only spell which CAN rebound it and luckily Harry Potter is the ONLY one who has it.
Or at least the only one relevant to the story.

It rebounds and Voldemort is dead.
How convenient.

Who the fuck writes stories like this...
It's just so convienient that the protagonist is the only one where the rule does not apply to.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

And the protection spell is created by checks notes love.

So apparently the murder of Lily Potter is the first time Voldemort murdered someone who loved someone else.
And no matter in which order the parents were murdered they apparently did not love each other. Thanks, JKR.

Who the...
what the... fuck.

it took less than 20 seconds to see the obvious flaw with this concept. And this is just one of the thousands of rules/ideas which create world building. And it's incredibly plot relevant!

Here's a question that shouldn't be too controversial here:

What Linux distribution should I install and why?

Please boost I'm super curious I'd love to learn what's out there now.

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

@cfg @rooster i'm using Debian everywhere.

For me the big advantage is that I only need to know one system. My daily driver uses the same commands as all my LXC or VMs or WSL.

It's a matter of practicality. Or course using something else everywhere offers the same advantage but it's harder to pull off when debian is so ubiquitous

saxnot, to Java
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

I'm not even sure if the average recruiter knows what JavaEE is.

Is it perhaps like C and C++?

No, instead JavaEE is an ecosystem in competition with Spring (Boot).

saxnot,
@saxnot@chaos.social avatar

I mean... it's complicated

For example JavaEE defines "JPA", which means Java Persistence API.
The framework came to be the clear victor of this field. JPA 2.0 is just "you're compliant if you use Hibernate terminology and behave like Hibernate" which... basically defines Hibernate to be THE impl of JPA 2.0

Hibernate is not a result of JavaEE
e. g. Spring Framework uses Hibernate for a very long time called Spring Data.

Everyone can use Hibernate
