Never quite know what will grab my attention. I’ve moved on from just agreeing that climate change will drastically affect the next generations and am actively looking at ways to build resilience and support each other. My generation has to hold its hands up and admit we failed to prevent this. Sorry kids. Going to spend my remaining time enjoying the best of humanity not the worst - art, cooperatives, writing, music, history, film (I should have just said arts), random stuff, etc. He/him

All the disbelief about the high public vote for Israel shows how on social media we tend to live in echo chambers of like minded people. If everyone did think like we do then we wouldn’t get the governments we do voted in.

there are so many harmful depictions of love in fiction and concepts of "perfect love" that are pushed in society. today, it was this one that annoyed me.
why "moving on" aka finding love and happiness after the death of a partner is considered something less? that it means that they didn't love them enough. that if it was true love, they would never be able to move on.

seb321,
@seb321@toot.community avatar

@reginasbread It’s reductive to assume people can only have one true love, even at one time.

"I'm so angry at Biden over Isreal/Gaza that I'm going to help Trump destroy democracy, weaponize the Justice system, send millions to deportation camps, lower the taxes on the wealthy and shift the burden to the middle class, cut Social Security, track and prosecute women having abortions, pardon the people who violently attacked Capitol police, dismantle NATO, help Russia, AND ON TOP OF ALL THAT do even more harm to Palestinians" is a take--it's just a really awful take, IMO.

seb321,
@seb321@toot.community avatar

@augieray @evan And if a leader was supporting a regime killing your children you’d still vote for them as the lesser of two evils? I mean I get it - I’m as terrified of Trump 2 as anyone, but this isn’t an easy decision for anyone so a little bit of empathy does help rather than “you’re stoopid if you don’t vote”.

seb321,
@seb321@toot.community avatar

@evan @augieray Another question then: do you think people are more or less likely to vote the way you think they should after you have criticised them and described them as illogical? Aren’t you a bit like the men telling women why they are wrong to prefer the bear?

seb321,
@seb321@toot.community avatar

@evan @augieray @JimmyB @anathema_device “He supports Israel’s right to exist.” Now that IS a bad take IMO. In the sense it ignores a lot of evidence and relies on personal belief.

seb321,

@fkamiah17 It was the decade that launched us on this trajectory away from public and community responsibility towards ever more held privately by ever fewer. No government ever should be allowed to sell off assets that belong to the country.

As there’s going to be months of posts on here, many of them by people I respect and agree with on most issues, saying “vote to keep Trump/the Tories out”: I’m not going to keep arguing - I’ll just leave this here.

If you are right, and the only way we can avoid fascism is to vote for parties which are supporting genocide, then we are already doomed. If the answer is that compromise then our humanity is lost. Personally, I think there are other ways to defeat fascism, but they are very hard.

Biden: Forgets stuff.

Trump: Constantly lies and adoringly quotes Hitler. And forgets stuff.

Not a difficult choice.

seb321,
@seb321@toot.community avatar

@lauren @tseitr This is manifestly not true. If people stand up now and show the Democrats that they won’t vote for Biden if he carried on with supporting genocide, they will have to make a decision. But people have to actually mean it or it won’t work. It’s high stakes but then thousands of children are being maimed and murdered. Where do you choose to draw the line?

seb321,
@seb321@toot.community avatar

@lauren @tseitr I think people need to be very clear the decision they are making and not deceive themselves with “we’ll hold him accountable afterwards”. Israel is bombing hospitals right now with US weapons that Biden is supplying. Their lives are being traded for a chance to keep Trump out of the White House. Not possible deaths next year or the year after - deaths right now. That is not fantasy, that what lesser evil looks like.

seb321,
@seb321@toot.community avatar

@tseitr @lauren Sometimes you have to deal with the crisis that’s happening now rather than trying to second guess what will happen in the future. I don’t pretend this isn’t a tough decision, but I don’t want to think I didn’t do whatever I could to stop genocide. I don’t live in the US but in the UK both our main parties follow the US in supporting Israel. I won’t vote for either but I won’t tell anyone else what to do. It’s their conscience.

    @fkamiah17 A great way of avoiding wider Middle East conflict, if you are a country not in the Middle East, is to not sell arms to countries in the Middle East and not bomb anyone in the Middle East.
