I don't like that #github encourages people to fork(!) repos although they only want to download/clone it. If you never plan to contribute to that repo, why not just star and clone it?
@dboehmer maybe they changed the web interface, I remember a few years back it was like that. I only judge based on the many forks one of my repo gets without any contribution ever. Why would people fork a repo just to clone it (or maybe even just bookmark it)? I don't understand that
@chakuari quite easy, I use it for everything personal computing, nowadays. Though that's also rare at the moment because I don't do much personal stuff...
It is a small system that's simple to understand, so it helps me to maintain my sanity. It's a system that "just works" at some point and you don't have to live in a state of "configuring before you can start your work" (1/x)
@chakuari it's very consistent. While unix/linux had to patch fixes on issues that wouldn't exist if it were more consistent, plan 9 maintains a level of consistency so fixes like that aren't needed (though it also has its issues of course).
It has the best C dialect for developing applications, and you can usually compile the whole system within a few minutes. It's also source-based, you rarely get binaries. Just compile from source
@chakuari I guess security-wise we're also in a good position, but not because our system is extremely security-based, just we tunnel everything via one protocol and it's easy to maintain services (files in a directory is easier than managing iptables and hundreds of daemons via some obscure program).
@chakuari speed-wise it's like unix should be: many small programs that do their task and do it well. We have a shell that's comparatively slow, but we never hit any bottlenecks with it, although half of our boot process is managed by it.
#UnrealEngine users: If you're into workflow enhancements & quality-of-life plugins, I could use your feedback. I've got several plugins I'd like to commercialize, and need to finalize my pricing. Might want some early beta testers too. Hit me up if you're interested. Boosts are much appreciated. :) #GameDev#UnrealDev
@sbseltzer I would be interested to know more about your experience publishing unreal plugins. I currently have only one plug-in on the marketplace, but I have a few more tools in brain or code that I consider
@sbseltzer not really. Only that it's annoying that the whole form doesn't save if you didn't send it in for review, so you might want to open it, copy all the fields to a text document and fill it in there at your own pace... At least that's what I did.
Oh, and it's annoying that you can't really update your plugin for older versions of Unreal, iirc.
Running #plan9front in my #thinkpad x280 for this entire year is going to be distractionless and super productive workstation. I dinnae miss the browser at all. Also I'm learning tons of new #computing things. There is no way back. Thank you to every single person and to the developers for this amazing experience. #plan9
@ibannieto I usually mix it with some browsing on my phone. It's more convenient for quick searches, but not convenient enough to get lost in the huge space of the internet.
@ibannieto there are many things that are more convenient on 9, like finger and wikifs(9p), but you can only display resources that are. And most information nowadays is web-based, sadly, and web is ... Let's just say "in an inconvenient state"
@ibannieto I can laugh at terms like web 3.0 or web 4.0. the web back then was closer to web 3.0 than what we have now. Everything is centralized, and to compete in any way you can't build your own website but have to boost your content on other weird "platforms". The web was never meant to be a "platform" in a technical sense!
Though I should mention that I'm also considering other jobs, too, like other Unreal related jobs (simulation, virtual production) and non-gamedev jobs that match my other interests (low-level programming, drivers and operating systems, plan 9). Obviously I'd have to learn more in those areas to be fully useful
I really hate the trend that #documentation is no longer written but the details are in video #tutorials, especially in #gamedev. I want to READ documentation, with graphics and explanation. On long pages with varying degrees of details. Not some obscure 50min video where I can find the missing piece of information in a single frame at minute 34. #unreal#ue5
@skyboygames I'd say it counts in some way, since there's different levels of documentation. In this case, it might be easier to read and to navigate under given circumstances than the code. For example, I sometimes sit on the toilet reading documentation on my phone, and that's where I can't fire up a big IDE to navigate Unreal source code.
Though you're right, if there're no comments in that header file it still makes sense to generate it, but I wouldn't call it "docs".
@astrid I know a site that contains the first word on that list, and it's a .us domain. I'd like for this page to further exist under that name, so I won't name it...

Privacy tip: When you sell or trade-in a vehicle, remember to erase all of your data from the in-car electronics. The car dealerships will NOT do this, although they should be required to.
This wasn’t done for the last few vehicles I’ve purchased. I know one previous owners name, where she lives, what her taste in music is, where her dad lives (and how often she visited him), and what restaurants she often went to. In the wrong hands, this is dangerous as hell.
As an #UnrealEngine user, what do you think is the difference between the "Tool" and "Window" menus in the editor? How do you choose which one to look in first?
@ben "Tools" are different tools, while "Window" is different windows for my currently running tool, e. g. Level Editor. Although in that case it's somewhat misleading (probably for historical reasons), because the content browser seems like it's own tool and not part of the level editor
if you are clearing your "old" #computer#books library, throwing them away, giving them to charity or getting rid of them: Please, contact me first. I'd be glad to get some off your hands! I'm paying a fair price for the book and assume all shipping and handling costs ( depending to where you live ).
By all means, please DO NOT get rid of your copy of "The AWK Programming Language" by Aho and Kernighan.
Feel free to DM me. There may be other books I may be interested in!
