It's bloody unconscionable that Covid vaccines and things like Paxlovid are being privatized, after taxpayer money funded research and development. The correct price for a vaccine is $0. The correct price for Covid treatment in this, the fourth year of the pandemic, is $0.

skquinn,
@skquinn@toot.community avatar

@lilithsaintcrow for that matter, we need to get rid of most of privatized "healthcare". The only things that people should have to pay for out of pocket are purely elected procedures like cosmetic surgery. Even then, the prices should be regulated as the free market has done a terrible job of that.

I have said it before and I will say it again: profit and healthcare don't mix.

What’s funny about being non-binary is that, to me, I’m the normal one. I think our whole thing just kind of works, no? You’re all just being silly about colors and stuff. We’re the main characters of gender, just admit it.

skquinn,
@skquinn@toot.community avatar

@ryanhoulihan good point, in a broader sense I believe that there are many fine points between pure male and pure female and the definition of what qualifies as masculine or feminine behavior does change over time. Of particular note, pink used to be the boy's color many years ago.

Ask ChatGPT "What is" a penis, a clitoris, a g spot, a labia, a scrotum, a vulva, etc. Every anatomical term relating to a man results in an answer, and every term relating to a woman yields an answer that is quickly replaced with "this content may violate our content policy." Lady parts are bad, mmkay!?

    Couple of new products we got today.

    The pineapple Pepsi is exclusive to Little Caesars Pizza only. It's not bad. Not too strong of a pineapple flavor but something you can certainly taste. The Pepsi side of things isn't bad either, this coming from someone who doesn't like Pepsi.

    Ranch flavored mashed potatoes we will try tomorrow and I'll give an update as to how they taste then.

    @evacide Some of those gathered actually did things which are dangerous and/or antagonistic towards law enforcement like launching fireworks at them (which are probably illegal in SF to boot). Once the cop got stabbed, I can see why they would declare it an unlawful assembly. I'm normally averse to taking the side of law enforcement, but it looks like some of the reasons for the arrests might be valid.

    if you're publishing open source code, your enemies will use it. personal enemies, political enemies, class enemies. they will use it and derive benefit from it and there is nothing you can do to stop it. (no, licenses aren't it.)

    i think that if you're not ready for this you should probably not publish open source code

    skquinn,
    @skquinn@toot.community avatar

    @whitequark Yes, free software is free for everyone to examine the source code of, including your enemies. However, making a program proprietary could be seen as ensuring your enemies have already won, as nobody else will have access to the source code. I would personally prefer to err on the side of the greater benefit to humanity and that's to publish under a free software license when I can.

    skquinn,
    @skquinn@toot.community avatar

    @whitequark If they are available as free software, at least people can understand how they work and modify them as desired (freedoms 0 and 1). I don't see how this could be perceived as deepening the harm. The proprietary model where these freedoms are not present could only be worse.

    skquinn,
    @skquinn@toot.community avatar

    @whitequark I'd say regulating what software does, from a computing freedom/free software point of view, is outside the scope of licensing. There are many programs released as free software which can be misused and abused for immoral, unethical, and unlawful ends. The Unabomber could have used Emacs or Vim to write his manifesto, for example (and for all I know maybe he did).

    I am not open to your ahistorical take on Google Chat and XMPP.

    Google didn't do anything wrong by using an open standard.

    They didn't do anything wrong by building a good interface that people liked to use.

    And they didn't do anything wrong by disconnecting from the network when the spam and harassment outweighed the benefit to their users.

    We, the XMPP community, failed to capitalize on success by diversifying the network. It's our own fault not enough nodes were there.

    This is hilarious. It appears that Twitter is DDOSing itself.

    The Twitter home feed's been down for most of this morning. Even though nothing loads, the Twitter website never stops trying and trying.

    In the first video, notice the error message that I'm being rate limited. Then notice the jiggling scrollbar on the right.

    The second video shows why it's jiggling. Twitter is firing off about 10 requests a second to itself to try and fetch content that never arrives because Elon's latest genius innovation is to block people from being able to read Twitter without logging in.

    This likely created some hellish conditions that the engineers never envisioned and so we get this comedy of errors resulting in the most epic of self-owns, the self-DDOS.

    Unbelievable. It's amateur hour.

    A mostly still movie of a Twitter feed showing a rate limited error message and a jiggling scrollbar indicating repeated attempts to load a resource.
    Firefox network console showing 10 requests to twitter.com zooming by per second.

    It still takes a while before Meta(P92) joins the Fediverse and the recent times we have read a lot of things from both sides

    Polls are not super reliable but maybe it will give a better overall picture of what you, the people using these platforms want

    The result will not be the definite outcome for us but I do take it into heavy consider because I love you all very much!

    "Would YOU want to federate with Meta's new platform?"

    skquinn,

    @stux Right now the whole reason for being on the Metaverse is with the idea of, long term, leaving Meta, Twitter, et al behind. Right now the latter is already out of my "traffic pattern" but some of my work will require me for the near future to have a presence on at least FB and IG. I'm looking forward to the day when I can de-Zuck my social media traffic pattern like I've already de-Musked it.

    @rasterweb Same here. I literally took Twitter right out of my social media traffic pattern. I am trying to reduce my usage of Facebook and Instasp-- er, Instagram as much as possible as well.

    What's really coming close to a deal-breaker for me is the term of use prohibiting any sex offenders from using Facebook or Instagram--even after they have completed their sentences and are no longer under court/parole board order to stay off the internet, and no matter how old the case is.
