Short story: I have curly hair. But I straighten it for work to appear “professional.” Or I wear a bun to look “serious.”

These ideas were shaped by social norms + experiences where I’ve been the only woman in the room or dealt w sexual harassment/bias.

But when my 15yo niece visited last week, I marveled at her stunning curls. “It just dries this way,” she said.

And it dawned on me - Wait, mine does too! Or would if I paid less attention to cultural expectations. So I think I’ll do that now.

@Sheril I totally applaud this! I'm so shocked at the issues I've run into, even in the last year or two, with my curly hair being "difficult" for on-camera work. It feels a certain way, all right.

@carpedavid @Sheril I didn't embrace my curly hair until high school/college!!

I wrote about the legacy of Star Trek: The Animated Series over at the BBC! It's more relevant than you think, with what's going on in the franchise right now:

I haven't been at my desk much and therefore haven't been around much (my travel schedule has been intense but should calm down by the end of September.

Anyways, I hope everyone is having a good week!!

@haploc Yes!!!!

(Usually I don’t bother with “I haven't been around much" type posts because I don't think anyone really cares BUT I also know people are looking for active users of Mastodon, versus those who joined and then disappeared, and I just want to let you all know I am still one.)

@hughtaylorscifi Yeah same!! I say it here because it feels like people care here

Yesterday, India became the first country to successfully land a spacecraft at the moon’s south pole. Here’s more on the Chandrayaan-3 mission and why everyone is obsessed with the lunar south pole.

India's Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is scheduled to attempt a soft landing at the moon's south pole around 8:34 am ET. If successful, they would be the fourth country to land on the moon and the first to do so at the south pole. Follow the livestream here:

Update: "We have achieved soft landing on the moon. India is on the moon!!" I'm honestly in tears. What an accomplishment, congratulations to ISRO!

There have been a LOT of crashed moon landers over the past few years. Why did Russia's Luna-25 fail, and why is it so HARD to land on the moon? And what do we think will happen to India's Chandrayaan-3 -- the Vikram lander is scheduled to attempt a landing tomorrow.

I want to buy a pair of Airpods Max for some travel coming up (I have a pair already I love but I gave them to my husband because he uses them a lot more) but I also don't want to get something now and then have something new announced in September. Does anyone know if there are credible rumors about new Airpods Max coming soon?

We have the first calibration images from ESA’s Euclid! Take a look, and find out why this observatory might give us fewer splashy images than JWST (but is incredibly important.)

I interviewed Michelle Yeoh a few years ago about and I mentioned offhand that I'd written an article about what seeing her use her accent on the bridge of a starship meant to me.

She stopped and said "Wait, that was YOU?"

And then proceeded to talk about how much that article had meant to HER and how it contributed to the success of the show.

I can't think about it without crying.

@kegill @atatassault Totally agree. The inside story is they hadn't been vigilant about their image usage and had gotten sued over using copyrighted stuff. Rather than try and fix the problem they just deleted everything before a certain time.
