Let’s do some arithmetic. A company takes in $4 million in total revenue. To accomplish this, it spends $62 million.

Net loss: $58 million.

How much would you pay to buy this company? https://mastodon.social/@GottaLaff/112196716174826637

How did they manage to spend $62 million running a jacked-up Mastodon instance?

steve, to threads
@steve@s.yelvington.com avatar

So far, the only negative side effect I have seen of #threads supporting ActivityPub has been the whining and demands for preemptive censorship (from people who have more in common with the book burners than they realize).

I haven't seen a single objectionable post from Threads.

My hope is that I'll be able to delete my Threads account and follow those I care about from my Mastodon account. Mastodon gives me some decent tools for controlling what I see (lists, filters, blocks) and doesn't push me into an unwanted algorithmic feed. I have multiple UI options from both apps and the web.

I understand that any time a social space is opened up to new participants, it is disruptive. But I don't really care. If you want a private discussion space with a culture that you control, you should be using a closed forum. A federated open social network is not the best tool for all purposes.

Ronna's lack of integrity is just part of the problem. News organizations should not be siphoning off money that should be spent on journalism and using it to subsidize politicians. How did we get here? It all started with Rupert Murdoch's corruption. His damage of journalism is exceeded only by what he has done to democracy in every nation where he operates.

The problem is not, as this story suggests, "high prices."

The problem is shamefully low pay in the United States.

Too many people are working multiple jobs at tipped-wage starvation scale ($2.13 US) while corporations reap the benefits of their labor.

Another one bites the dust.

It was just a matter of time. Home newspaper delivery became unsustainable several years ago.

When an entire neighborhood has only one or two subscribers, it's impossible to get drivers (who are independent contractors).

The high-tech printing plant is shut down. The stately offices vacated. A skeleton news staff posts unedited copy.

The tension between whether the Washington Post should be a local or a global publication online has plagued it since the Digital Ink days. Print is dying. Now the question is unavoidable.

NYT pretty much abandoned local years ago, and that's how we got George Santos.

I know it's ancient history, but it's worth remembering that the WaPo Metro desk broke the Watergate story.

As political kooks work to destroy public health, there sure are a lot of horrible diseases just waiting to get back into the business of killing humans. The anti-vax crackpots don't even know what they are.

The year I was born, there were 57,628 cases of polio in the United States. My childhood best friend was a polio victim who wore metal braces on his legs.

We lined up in the school gym to get polio vaccines -- first the Salk killed-virus version, then the Sabin weakened-virus dose.

Widespread vaccination works. The disease is now regarded as "eliminated" in the United States and indeed most of the world.

But it is not gone. It waits for us to be stupid.
