Talk about a throwback.

@sjharder I love to see that kind of thing. Wish it happened more often.

I see that Landscape (the guy behind the Stereo Field and Noon) has a new product that's a handheld string resonator similar to an Ebow. On top of looking very sci-fi, you can vary the vibration via CV. Pretty compelling.

stevenray,
@stevenray@sfba.social avatar

@bfuhrman right? It costs twice what an Ebow costs, but I think it has extra features.

I have a bass, not a guitar, but this thing is making me consider buying a cheap one.

stevenray,
@stevenray@sfba.social avatar

@grahamdunning yup yup. It's very tempting. Problematic for the bank account.

stevenray,
@stevenray@sfba.social avatar

@bfuhrman did you listen to the samples? Several for piano sounded really interesting.

stevenray,
@stevenray@sfba.social avatar

@bfuhrman it sure generates lots of possibilities. I wish there were more bass examples. That'd be my only initial use for it (though this is making me think about buying a cheap 'travel' guitar solely for use with it. Like I need more things to buy).

Today's wine review features an inexpensive but tasty Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Trader Joe's. Great with pizza!

If the Uber driver is illegally driving in the bus/taxi lane because traffic is at a standstill, do I tip him more because he got me home faster or less because he could have gotten us pulled over? 😬

stevenray,
@stevenray@sfba.social avatar

@Bronwyn personally, I'd tip him less because of his driving behavior. It doesn't represent me, you know?

I think maybe the best tribute I can make to my mom (other than to mention how decent, how sweet, how respectful to others she was), is to show you pictures of our garden.

She was an artist, but also a gardener. She somehow instilled both of those things in me, so that twenty-three years after she passed and 3000 miles away, we have a nice garden. I think of her often when I’m working in it.

Her garden was full of roses, boxwood, azaleas and wildflowers. I wish I had pictures of it to show you.

Thanks, Mom.

The southwest corner of the garden, featuring Geranium maderense, Cala Lily and Birds Nest Fern. The corner of our wooden fence is in the background.
Taken from the back (west) end of the garden, looking southeast. Areas of sun and shade. Trunks of a holly tree take up the left edge of the photo, with Geranium maderense and other plants in the background.

I know it’s not but Zowie decided that I didn’t do it well enough and besides, she was sitting on her throne.

If anyone knows what specific kind of chair this is, I’d love to know. My loved furniture in this style and my parents had several pieces. We got this one.

French of some era.

This is an industrial designed exercise bike from Lithuania that can store 2KWh of electricity generated by your own exercise.

The electricity can then be used for loads of stuff - it has a bunch of DC outputs, like USB-C (up to 60W) and USB-A, and AC outputs (can output up to 2KW - enough for an oven!)

It can also be fed from a solar panel, or the mains.

It’s about 3K EUR, so not much more than a high end Peloton , but obvs serving a very different market…

stevenray,
@stevenray@sfba.social avatar

@mrchrisadams it’s be nice if there were trainers that we could mount regular bikes in that would generate electricity.

stevenray,
@stevenray@sfba.social avatar

@Julianoe I can’t tell whether your’re agreeing with me or disagreeing, lol. :-)

I think if I could use the bike as a bike sometimes, and other times attach it to a trainer which houses all of the electricity-generating stuff, that’d make the bike more versatile without making it more complicated.

?

@stevenray@sfba.social avatar

@Julianoe thanks lots!
