absolutely baffled that after putting up with steam's utter bullshit for a decade, the way youtube's algorithm works feels downright meritocratic

like, i know what the metrics for a successful video are and i can work towards refining them in my videos, and YT doesn't expect me to have built a preexisting fanbase before launch (whereas that's literally the only way to succeed on steam) and in fact from what i can tell YT doesn't seem to care much at all about what views i bring from outside the platform

suqdiq,

@eniko
Cant you also earn money for the games on youtube? Say im about to pirate your game, i see your an indie dev, maybe you have a patreon i can send the money through or youtube :) if i get the game i dont even have to pirate it, and does that need to involve steam?

suqdiq,

@eniko
I paid 20eur on steam the other day cause my kid wanted a game, while i was pirating it i remembered to check if indie dev, i did and proceeded to just buy it on steam. If there was a way to get 100% of money into this dev and still get the game, i wouldve done it :)

So, less techie...

Before I went on a cruise, got covid, and had a stroke, I really felt like I was "on a roll". Getting loads of work done - mostly fun stuff, but working all day solidly (because I want to).

The whole episode screwed me up, for months. I had no enthusiasm, no stamina, no interest, and the whole "stroke" thing left me a tad depressed.

Getting things right in my head has been slow.

But I am encouraged by the last few days, so busy doing fun stuff I did not even hot tub!

suqdiq,

@revk
Do you think stroke was due to covid?

suqdiq,

@revk
I saw interesting thread the other day talking about increase platetlets with covid and how it results in bad vascular conditions :/

Gmail has once again blacklisted my mail server because of the SIX emails I have sent in the entirety of December so far, because obviously that constitutes "an unusual rate of unsolicited mail".

I set up SPF, DKIM, DMARC, first get lumped in with a bad /24 IP block, slowly build up a reputation as a non-spammy IP, etc. etc., but none of that matters.

This is nothing but a racketeering scheme to force everyone to pay for Gmail for business.

suqdiq,

@siguza
So i guess if i used one of my work gmail accounts that has enterprise support to receive an email notification from you. Once i dont get one i could ask support to know why and ask to unblock maybe?

Wondering if all this fiddling with ZFS and big box of hard drives is worth it, went to compare it to AWS elastic file storage and whelp...

I've downloaded 100TB (more, but 100 is round number) of data so far. To store that in EFS near me, that would cost $0.33/GB/month to store, $0.03/GB to read, and $0.07/GB to write. Downloading the data does a 100% write (obvi) and read (checksumming). So merely to get the data it would cost $10,000, and to park it for ONE MONTH would cost $33k.

That's more than the whole NAS for ONE MONTH. and the NAS has 500TB. Even with 25% storage efficiency from mirroring and backups, we could afford to buy a new NAS every month instead of using AWS. That's a hell of a scam.

suqdiq,

@jonny
Can you give more info about the nas like specs and cost please <3 <3

suqdiq,

@jonny
Heh pretty sure where i work we could buy one of these every month and colocate them each in a different datacentre and pay 3 people to support it followthesun and still be cheaper than what we pay in S3 costs :x might make a single page with some estimations to show senior mgmt whenever i feel like hearing "but oh the maintenance/mgmt costs would be bad and we're already overworked as it is" sort of excuse

I miss working with non cloud (sorry for venting at you)

In the last few days I’m experimenting with substituting CRUD API code with Stored Procedures which directly produce the endpoints JSON as a single-row scalar value. API is then just a wrapper that authenticates, validates input and streams the DB’s JSON directly to the client.

  • No ORMs, no SQL generators etc.
  • All SQL is where it should belong: in the database
  • API does only single „CALL myfunc(…)“ db calls
  • A simple centralised error handler can accurately report errors from the database
  • No weird mixed row/json columns scanning into structs and re-marshalling everything to JSON
  • Codebase is collapsing to 20% (by LOCs)
  • Stored Procedures can use wonderfully declarative SQL code
  • Response times in the microseconds, even for multiple queries, all happens inside the DB

More side effects:

  • the data model can change and evolve without touching the API at all
  • Zero deploys mean zero downtime
  • the API application is so tiny, I could easily switch it to any programming language I want (yes, even Common Lisp) without worrying about available databases libraries, type mapping and rewriting tens of thousands of lines of intermixed language/SQL-code.

The general direction of the dev industry is heading in the opposite direction. More ORMs, more layers, more database abstraction. More weird proprietary cloud databases with each their own limited capabilities and query language.

So you tell me: Is it crazy? Is it wrong? Why do I have doubts despite everything working out beautifully?

suqdiq,

@louis
not sure if you have read the source code for crt.sh but perhaps you should :) it's essentially made in postgresql :D

Today I realized that using those fancy screen capture->documentation systems are the perfect way to "backup" configs in SaaS vendors that don't make it easy (or indeed, possible at all) to export your configurations, users, etc.

Because nothing says "2023 IT" like taking a video of your web session in order to have "the data"

suqdiq,

@kurtseifried
I use dev tools and export as HAR for this :D

suqdiq,

@kurtseifried
Yup HAR needs a bunch of pre-planning in terms of secrets/creds, what ive done in the past is having test/doc creds which i disable/delete after docs :D

There's also these 2 tools but havent used them yet personally :)

Last night Lisa and I went to a Chinese restaurant with the computer scientist Mike Fourman, his partner Jeanne, and her son and his wife. The bill was £98. To add a tip and make the bill divisible by 3, Mike rounded it up to £108. I instantly recognized that this number is divisible by 3, since the digits add up to 9. But to my annoyance I didn't instantly remember what 108 divided by 3 is. That is, I didn't remember thinking about this question before.

Later, in the middle of the night, I realized I had run into this question!

Do you see what I mean?

If not, read on....

suqdiq,

@johncarlosbaez
Did you know 108 is the number of beads in a japamala (sort of a rosary thing in hinduism)? Also most big deities in hinduism have 108 names :D

2x nanopi boards usb powered

in terms of motivation,
apple devices violate my rights as a citizen since they participate in a worldwide snitch/tracking network and i don't have an option to opt-out, only to be a victim of it.

Why local-first matters, from @davidpierce

"If Obsidian ever goes away you'll still have the app, if a plugin ever disappears you'll still have the version you installed... And if for some reason way down the line the app stops working entirely, you'll still have your folder of text files, because that's all it is anyway, and you can take them somewhere else."

"If Obsidian goes away you'll still have Obsidian. That is local-first software."

Well that last sentence hits hard on anyone sensitive to palestinian experience since 1948. It is actually quite easy to do it, thats literally what settlers have done and still do till this day with support from the occupation army. So yeah it is quite easy to rip people out of their homes by force but certainly not nice or humane.
