I'm trying to watch Babylon 5 on Tubi. I'd never watched it but with Harlan Ellison on staff & so many nerds I know having watched it, I thought it'd be good.

Sigh. This has been a tough row so far. Overacted, cheesy sets & costume design, terrible computer models... the writing is up for judgment.

I'll give it 10 episodes before I switch back to Deep Space Nine.

Thirty years ago, I used the holidays to rewrite our in-house 3d tool from scratch, based on specs and design I worked on for a year. On January 2nd 1994, the first version was running!
I'm incredible proud, humbled and impressed of where it went. Happy 30th birthday :)

Most outrageous library patron requests in 12 years:

  1. I know you all have better candy in the back. Go get me some.
  2. Trace my family history back 950 years to William the Conqueror and I don’t want that internet stuff. I want a family tree printed on paper.
  3. Make me out a will. My kid gets everything, that isn’t too hard.
    Let’s see your top three!

thematic,
@thematic@mastodon.green avatar

@jillrhudy @librarians The minor was there on their own. The gist of it was that the complainer wanted to have a more controlled environment than what was available in a small library.

@n1vux @nyrath @michael_w_busch @conansysadmin How difficult is it to make a cassette tape, and the heads etc. to work with it? I mean to use the data while either building up or treading in place.

Is there a part of semiconductor production that would be likely to be just copied from a single old document? I get that a lot of it is scattered and that a degree of reinventing the wheel is necessary without even considering the completely changed supply chains.

#Today, I am celebrating my 4 years without flying ✈️.

The #Earth’s #climate is perturbed by #human activites. One of the easiest things to do towards #sustainability is to cut air travels. Thus, 4 years ago, I cut my frequent flyer cards and decided to #StayGrounded, using only low-#carbon travel means such as #train.

The New Speaker, Mike Johnson, is working hard for the wealthy donor class already. He wants to condition aid to Israel on slashing the same amount from the IRS budget—because the Uber wealthy don’t like how that agency is now far better at collecting taxes they owe. Don’t play political games with aid packages, rookie.

It will also give astronauts the go ahead they need from NASA to travel to Mars.

Inflatable habitats make a lot of sense for living on the Moon. Your living space can be packed into a rocket and inflated many times the stowed size on the Moon. With the right materials, inflatable habitats can be strong and protected from micrometeorite strikes. They can even serve as structural elements. NASA has a new challenge encouraging students to design inflatable lunar structures, from habitats to garages, to learn the most effective way to live on the Moon.

A planet the size of Mars crashed into the Earth 4 billion years ago, creating a cloud of debris that formed the Moon. When Apollo astronauts reached the Moon, they found moon rocks that helped pinpoint when this event happened. A new study of crystals in lunar samples pushed that event back about 40 million years ago from previous estimates, setting the Moon's formation to about 4.46 billion years old - not long after the Earth formed.

@fraser And if the impact had been not 40 but 400 million years later, it might have meant a clearly different outcome.

Although asteroids can contain hundreds or even thousands of times higher concentrations of rare metals, mining costs are even greater. It makes more sense to mine the rock under our feet than to go to space. But new rockets are driving down the costs of reaching space, automation will let robots do the hard work in space, and increasing environmental concerns make it harder to absorb the externalities. When will asteroid mining finally be viable?

https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2221345120

thematic,
@thematic@mastodon.green avatar

@fraser Just need to ban the terrestrial mines. This will be obvious later, but I hope it can be done simultaneously with other important changes. The issues are already clearly visible.
