Happy birthday to #paleontologist Mary Anning (1799 –1847)! She was the wrong class, sex & religious denomination to gain the education, opportunity to work & communicate her results or garner any respect as a pioneering paleontologist. Further, during her lifetime most people thought Earth was a mere few thousand years old, based on a very literal interpretation of the Bible & found the idea of extinction did not fit in with the story of creation. 🧵1/ #linocut#sciart#womenInSTEM#printmaking
In 2007 I painted a mural on the ceiling of an exhibition room at Pools Cavern Visitor Centre, Derbyshire, UK. It was a Carboniferous scene, partly depicting life on land but mostly marine and freshwater species. It was fun but it demanded long hours and a few nights sleep in my car.
Happy birthday to #philosopher Bertrand Russell (1872-1970) who, amongst other things speculated about a teapot orbiting in space. This lino block print of Russell's Teapot is part of my series of Imaginary Friends of Science of charismatic thought experiments. In this case, the alledged china teapot, in orbit between Earth & Mars is an analogy by the philosopher to make the case that the philosophic burden of proof 🧵

In 2007, Roar Publishing planned a book about evolution. I created some artworks for it but the book was shelved. Here is my draft drawing for the Ordovician spread that never happened...
More Drawing Day! Just finished this bear cub drawing! Took a few sessions in coffee shops and a cafeteria. Used my Pentel .3 (2B) and .5 mm (4B) pencils and tried the new .2 mm Pentel Orenz from Pentel Canada. Perfect for detailing, though the B lead is a bit hard. 2B lead coming. #sciart
I made a pattern of my linocut porcelain crab for #InsertAnInvert2024! Porcelain crabs, Neopetrolisthes maculatus are decapod crustaceans in the family Porcellanidae, which resemble true crabs but are in fact closer related to squat lobsters. These are 1 of at least 5 groups of decapod crustaceans which have evolved to be more crab-shaped in a process known as carsinisation. Find this on Spoonflower minouette shop
Tried out my new Leuchtturm 1917 A5 with this detailed drawing of a painted turtle. I love how the paper handles graphite and how bright white it is! Our pond has 14 painted turtles, which can live up to 40 years and survive winter by absorbing oxygen through their skin. #sciart
A porcelain crab for #InsertAnInvert2024! Looks like a crab, has crab in its name…is it a crab? Nope. False crab. Porcelain crabs, Neopetrolisthes maculatus are decapod crustaceans in the family Porcellanidae, which resemble true crabs but are in fact closer related to squat lobsters. They have flattened bodies as an adaptation for living in rock crevices. 🧵1/2
The cover of the 2007 book DINOSAUR, published by Roar, wasn't the original concept. Here is the original art, there would have been a plastic hologram eyeball (not shown here).
Happy birthday to Danish #seismologist Inge Lehmann (1888 – 1993) who demonstrated that the Earth's core is not a single molten sphere, but contained an inner solid core, in ‘36. She was a pioneer #womanInScience, a brilliant seismologist & lived to be 105.
As she first postulated, the #earth has roughly 3 equal concentric sections: mantle, liquid outer core & solid inner core. 🧵1/n
Happy birthday to founder of modern nursing, social reformer, statistician, data visualization innovator & writer Florence Nightingale (1820 – 1910)!
Nightingale earned the nickname "The Lady with the Lamp" during the Crimean War, from a phrase used by The Times, describing her as a “ministering angel” making her solitary rounds of the hospital at night with “a little lamp in her hand”. 🧵1/n
