Silicon Valley native, tech, artist, wonk, raconteur. I'll veer from topic to topic, and change stylistically on a whim. Curious about stuff and things.

UCD alum (PoliSci/IR & Tech Policy). Strong interests in the arts, actual political science, cliodynamics, systems theory, and seeking a bit of adventure at even the smallest scale.

I own more albums than you have had changes of underpants since birth.

", or NetNews, is a text-only social discussions forum, or rather a set of a great many forums, called "newsgroups," carried by multiple servers around the world. Although the original developers closed down their instance in 2010, that was just one server out of hundreds, and many are still running just fine. It never went away – it's still alive, you can get on it for free, and there is a choice of client apps for most OSes to help you navigate."

In today's rage-inducing , we have regular culprit / , asking me to back up my photos to the cloud. And they can go piss right off. I take my photos weekly or monthly at the most and archive them myself, and keep nothing of value in a cloud locker. The fact that there is no permanent way to stop this notification is what absolutely incenses me.

A one off concert in tribute to the late, very great player and composer , overseen by his friend and colleague . The show revolved around reconfigured lineups to cover the different eras and genres of Wayne, which included people like Cindy Blackman, Carlos Santana, Jack DeJohnette, Marcus Miller, Joni Mitchell, Esperanza Spalding, Kamasi Washington, Chris Potter, and more. A wild, varied cross-section of Shorter's influence at the Bowl

A clear indicator of just how far the US circus has fallen is evidenced right here; when Bill Kristol is saying this out loud, you know even traditional conservatives are terrified of madness and late stage as a combination.

"“In other words, while justices are jetting all over the world on fancy private family vacations paid for by -wing or collecting hefty cash gifts from those billionaires for their personal museums and family members private school tuition payments, the says the real problem in our legal system is that too many victims of corporate wrongdoing are fighting access to the courts in the first place,”"

Sounds about right.

I blame @deirdresm for now having me on an hour+ long kick of "favorite Wal bassists" (started with Justin Chancellor of Tool, threw a little XTC and Rush in there, now we're into the quirkier range of players with Percy Jones of Brand X and now Mick Karn of...a bunch of stuff): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_ER2AADsWg

Before they became club-hit darlings, Everything But the Girl carved out a slice of post-punk-pop experimentation that was far more interesting than they often got credit for (e.g. their slickest cuts made it to "quiet storm" radio, but there was so much more to it), including live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NljK-sXaMtk

"Annie Lennox, Wendy and Lisa Working Together on Trio Project."

I find this a genuinely exciting prospect, given the Art Pop tendencies of all participants, and their eclectic tastes, the worst thing this could be is just 'pretty good', but definitely could be something far more ambitious and resonant given the talent pool.

The album, cut, and video, also was the first appearance of one Sinead O’Connor.

This track by was probably the first solo track of his I ever heard, and it still is as listenable as it was in the mid 80s:

So, I'll likely do a longer write up on this, but after a few years of largely not trying to sell #art due to not completing a lot of works or otherwise not tending to things, I had intended to start up the old lines, and I fine them either broken (#RedBubble), shut down (#DeviantArt Prints) or doing just squirt-of-piss dumb cash grabs (all of the above, plus #Society6).

Everyone wants art, very few want to make actual artists lives remotely worth the effort.

Maybe #etsy?

One, he's a musically talented producer with a seemingly endless ability to make a hit song who understands how to make something sound good. And two, he's a narcissistic self-absorbed bell end and not always artist friendly. It's a reputation he seems happy to have earned.

Playing with flame is a perennial joy (and also confusing as hell, as all the tools I've tried over the years are great for exploring ideas in an open ended fashion but I've never found a really linear/'predictable' approach to using them, regardless of how much fun it is, it still feels a lot like video game "button-mashing".)

"I found a used copy of Michael Gordon‘s "Weather" in a bargain bin some time near the end of the 90s, and it stuck with me.

Gordon is co-founder of the musical collective and attendant festival, and his work is often pretty interesting for it’s weird mix of accessible orchestral motifs, drenched in minimalism (think ) and adventurous stretching (think ) but it’s really his own thing."
