A little over a week ago I put my Filament Stackers up for sale on @cults3d & Printables. I'm happy to report a handful of sales 😄

quick numbers, commentary, & screenshots of sales pages in thread.

@masukomi I still haven't printed one out, maybe over the weekend I'll get to it!

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@derek do eet.

I really wish I could figure out a way to make them print faster.

I feel like the total time acquired to make a full stack means you just have to have them printing constantly in the background. I’d start one in the morning before doing any work and just leave it printing there while I did other things.

At this point, I have 10 but they’re standing next to a stack of 10 boxed filaments which i would prefer to have more visible.

So, yeah. I gotta get printing too 😜

@masukomi @cults3d Just purchased, because this is genuinely something I need. Look forward to printing it!

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@koz Yay! Thanks. 🙇‍♀️Please let me know if you have any issues or wishes.

koz,
@koz@chaos.social avatar

@masukomi I'm mostly curious whether they'd fit spools in Eibos bags: https://shop.eibos3d.com/products/eibos-3d-filament-pump?variant=42736761340083

Printing one to test this theory right now.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@koz looking at the picture on their site. I don’t see any reason it would not fit, but please let me know.

I use Ziploc bags with desiccant cylinders in the center of the spool, and my bags are much less compact

koz,
@koz@chaos.social avatar

@masukomi This is good to know! I'll see how I go, and post a make.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@koz 🤔 now that I'm back at my desktop i notice the little screw cap on the top. I'm concerned that it might rub against the top. Just slap anything flat across the flat top part to simulate the bottom edge of the one that'll be on top of it.

If it rubs or is "too close", let me know how much extra height you need and I'll add a taller variant to the page. I assume that'll be free to folks who already bought it.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@koz Hmm.... Maybe there's value in making some "shims" that are just short stackable walls (with the nubs to keeep things in place) to extend the height of a particular section after you've printed it.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@koz et voilà a 3cm shim! :D

I think I'll make a few sizes and probably upload them tomorrow. Today's getting to the "lots of not-computer stuff" time. ;)

koz,
@koz@chaos.social avatar

@masukomi Printed the model. Overall very happy, but some minor improvements (one of which you already beat me to!) would make it perfect: https://www.printables.com/model/853521-filament-stackers-v4/comments/1754419

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@koz posted a response there in case anyone else has the same problem. I'm working on more shims this morning.

I'm going to try to make a taller version too, but I just realized that that would require altering the bridge trusses that are hidden in the design. Without altering them it'd loose some strength, & definitely aesthetics if i add a chunk of solid height near the top.

The calculations aren't really the problem. re-modeling the trusses is ;)

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@koz actually.... getting the math right for the placement of those circles was a pain in the butt. ;)

Oh, and I forgot. How much extra do you need to compensate for the cap with a "comfortable" amount of clearance? That is to say, you shouldn't have to worry about it scraping the one above it when you slide it in or out.

koz,
@koz@chaos.social avatar

@masukomi Very little. 10mm would be more than enough I think.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@koz some options for you https://connectified.com/@masukomi/112366676571934655

😉

I'm test printing a shim now. I'll test print a tall boy after that. If everything prints without issue I'll either add these to the page late tonight or tomorrow morning.

I already know that the solid ones print well so I don't need to test print those, but i don't like uploading untested models.

linux_mclinuxface,
@linux_mclinuxface@fosstodon.org avatar

@masukomi
That's a pretty neat model.

why the stripe though?

@cults3d

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@linux_mclinuxface @cults3d

to directly answer the question "because I thought it looked more interesting." however, I think you're asking that based on the assumption that it's in the model. It's not. The model is a single color / part.

Note that it's different on every one in the stack. I've just "painted" them in the slicer

linux_mclinuxface,
@linux_mclinuxface@fosstodon.org avatar

@masukomi @cults3d no, I was just wondering if you did it for a specific reason. Felt like it might have been purposeful, not just decorative.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@linux_mclinuxface nah. purely decorative. ;)

The Bambu AMS makes color switching so easy, that for something like this it just felt boring to leave each one a solid color. :D

mycrowgirl,
@mycrowgirl@mastodon.social avatar

@masukomi just dropping in to say that I think these are hella clever and I could see them being useful in a library makerspace setting!

When they interlock with each other, do you think it would be rigid enough to work with a wheeled base plate option?
(That would make it easy to bring the supplies between workstations/room)

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@mycrowgirl Quick top-of-head response as i'm about to get on a call. Probably not, but i can make something that would be, & wifey had related thoughts about alternate uses.

problems:
against a wall they're nice and stable. Free standing they're a little wibbly at ~10 high (80cm). They're just not designed for sideways pushing & the nubs are short

I think you'd want ones that actually lock / snap together rather than stack, have a solid bottom, & probably have a short lip in the front.

mycrowgirl,
@mycrowgirl@mastodon.social avatar

@masukomi thanks, that definitely makes sense! (more curious musing than active need on my end)

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@mycrowgirl well if you end up with an actual need, just holler. I'm happy to figure something out.

Context: This is a pretty niche product. Most people don't need to stack their filament vertically, and there are great solutions like RepRap for storing it horizontally.

Marketing: I've talked about these here, on one discord for RPG people, & 2 small online friend groups. So, essentially nothing.

You can't throw something online and expect people to magically find it & think it's worth buying, especially if the maker has no track record. As such, I didn't really expect anything.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

I've had 5 total sales 🎉
I was expecting one; maybe two.

Cults has let me know that after their cut, I'll receive $14.46 from the 3 sales there. This doesn't include money transfer fees. Printables takes the same 20% cut, but it's unclear if theirs includes credit card fees or not & I can't see what my net revenue will be from them.

Here's what the sales page looks like on both. Cults is the white one, Printables the black. Cults is letting me know the buyers country too.
🧵3/4

a screenshot of printables sales page. It has a similar table of who, when, & how much but that's about it. I don't know what my cut will be in the end.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

If you're one of the fine folks who've already bought the model: 🙇‍♀️ Thank you. Please let me know your thoughts, and if you'd like any features or changes in future versions.

If you haven't but have a desire to stack your filament vertically, I'd be remiss to not give you a link to my solution. ;)

I forgot the commentary:
Cults continues to have a solution that feels like they actually want you to use it AND that they actually want you to ENJOY using it and derive value from it.

Printables continues to feel like they don't actually want anyone to use their selling platform & that they made it because they felt they had to.

I love using the Printables site, but dislike selling there. I probably need to be there just because that's where more people are, but...

🧵 5/4 (oops)

oct2pus,
@oct2pus@jade.moe avatar

@masukomi I thought printables only had subscription models as their sole form of paid models

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@oct2pus yeah they REALLY don't make it easy to find out about this. If you're interested it's hidden under "settings" because of course "settings" is where someone's going to look when thinking "how to i sell one-offs on printables?"

also you need a stripe account.

Nothing about setting this up on printables is good.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@oct2pus oh, and the cut they take for individual sales (20%) - OR the fact that they take one - isn't mentioned anywhere except in the terms of service that you have to agree to when configuring the account to sell. And you can only sell 1 thing untill you've sold 5 of it, and then you can only sell ten until.. and then.... 🤦‍♀️ it's all terrible.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

oh, and printables also gives me this page of graphs which... i dunno. maybe it'd be useful if i was doing this for a living? It's pretty but i'm not convinced of its value. Also the numbers for the free and non-free models seem to be all mixed together in the "interactions" graphs which is a bad thing for sellers.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

oh. i figured something out. the take-home numbers for printables can be found in my stripe account. From the $6 model I get $4.24 AND Stripe uses ACH transfers (ancient US banking tech) to shove funds directly into my bank account so there shouldn't be a transfer fee. Cults is giving me $4.81. I don't remember if ACH transfers are an option from them or not.

But apparently i needed to submit identity verification stuff to stripe and they'd paused charges on it until they approve that. 🤦‍♀️
