Oh swell.

will start releasing treated nuclear wastewater from the wrecked plant into the Pacific Ocean on Aug. 24

@GottaLaff A lot of people won't agree, but from all I've seen, this is really no big deal. They've removed all the contaminants they can, and what remains is at lower levels than companies all over the world are already free to release.
The only problem is that it is radioactive. Probably less so than someone's granite countertops, but radioactive is a word that scares a lot of people and which has been used to influence mobs for years.

    @MaJ1 Can’t imagine. 🤔

    orv,

    @GottaLaff Honestly, it's hardly radioactive as it's been actively filtered. And it's going to be way diluted in the ocean.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @orv Trash is diluted in the ocean too. That’s working out well.

    orv,

    @GottaLaff Right. But most trash doesn't decay over time into harmless non- radioactive molecules.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @orv Tell it to the fish who absorb and digest it before it becomes "harmless."

    orv,

    @GottaLaff Yeah, about as much as you eating a banana, I suspect.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @orv Feel free to eat all you want after this. Personally, I have altered my eating habits since Fukushima.

    Btw, fish and sea life do absorb that stuff, I’m not swimming in a toxic ocean. See ya!

    roque,
    @roque@mastodon.social avatar

    @GottaLaff Meh, it’s not a big deal now. Just being used as clickbait. There’s much better stuff to be activist about with Fukushima. Like the fact that it happened in the first place because bureaucrats started cutting corners on safety and stopped working with outside inspectors. And they STILL don’t want to cooperate internationally and therefore most Japanese plants are still shut down even though people’s energy bills are ridiculous this year.

    timo21,
    @timo21@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @GottaLaff it was nice having fish in the ocean.

    focussed0,

    @GottaLaff Thoughts:

    3 eyed fish from the Simpson's

    Australia's conservatives (LNP) support nuclear what could go wrong?

    China's hypocrisy - Don't comment on internal matters in China, but they can comment on Japan?

    I don't know anything about tritium disposal, but the assumption that we can just dilute stuff in the oceans forever is flawed. Microplastics anyone?

    @GottaLaff
    I have no idea what treated nuclear wastewater is.
    Sounds like being a little pregnant.

    beeftacos,

    @MichelleRNCHPN @GottaLaff Yeah, I saw "treated" and thought... hunh?

    I don't know if they have a better option, or anything. This might be the least worst option, I don't know. But "treated"? That's just BS...

    beeftacos,

    @MichelleRNCHPN @GottaLaff ...hmm... I guess "treated" means that they've filtered out as much stuff as they can. But there's nothing they can do to separate the tritium-water from the regular-water.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @beeftacos @MichelleRNCHPN I can’t believe that, in my replies, people are shrugging this off.

    MichelleRNCHPN,
    @MichelleRNCHPN@sfba.social avatar

    @GottaLaff @beeftacos
    Which also explains the general "oh well" attitude with COVID.

    JJPeterson,
    @JJPeterson@toot.community avatar

    @GottaLaff all possible. It’s the cooling water used to cool the overheated core. It’s full of radioactive hydrogen and carbon particles and the water is treated to reduce the radioactivity to “near” background level and they theorize the ocean will buffer it down the rest of the way. But no one really knows how dangerous it is to life. Local fishermen are unhappy.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @JJPeterson I was just saying that to someone who'd defending it.

    @Bam @MichelleRNCHPN @GottaLaff Last week, NPR did a really good piece on the treated water, with Miles O’Brien and the chief nuclear scientist in charge. …my take away, comparing it to drinking water.

    MichelleRNCHPN,
    @MichelleRNCHPN@sfba.social avatar

    @fondoffawns @Bam @GottaLaff
    Yes and that takes me to the scene in the movie Erin Brockovich where she offers the officials from PG & E a glass of water from Hinkley, California (where they knew the water was contaminated) and the recoiled.
    I understand this is a complicated issue, just want to see those making the decisions actually drink the water if you know what I mean.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @MichelleRNCHPN Don't even start me on the ingestion/absorption of toxic chemicals by sea life. @fondoffawns @Bam

    I know. The circle of life is one thing, the circle of chemicals that never break down is another.
