honestly, i see this as a good thing. if reddit had walked back the changes, they would just find other more subtle ways to be greedy and hurt people down the line. it's dead! we're moving on to more ethical and truly free platforms.

boshswag,

I hope a lot of users are actually avoiding reddit during these protests and not just relying on the subreddits closing to send a message.

Icalasari,

Accidentally visited once out of force of habit. Honestly, visiting just once and reading one thread before realizing isn't half bad for something that was a daily, constant habit

I just need a good reader that allows me to view lemmy stuff and kbin stuff in a Reddit-like interface and I’m good. Been a redditor since 2010 or so, really sick over what they’ve become.

Wisely,

I would love an app for kbin with the UI and features of Apollo. Is that something being worked on or even feasible?

The hardest part is lacking all the beautiful non tech sections of reddit; i doubt any will make their way here. Hope to be wrong!

Agreed, we need to help people find their way here. They're not going to come unless they know where to go.

Bubkis,

This one is already really similar to reddit at least, I long for the bar at the top that shows all the communities I'm subbed too, it's definitely possible the people running this one will make changes too

Hikiru,

You can turn the bar on

gogobonobo,

I managed to get a view that is pretty similar to that by hitting the hamburger menu on the upper left and clicking on the gear icon, then “Show Top Bar”. There were a ton of super useful settings there but it was pretty buried.

I found how to get the top bar to show similar how RES had it, but is there a way to have it only show subscribed mags or choose which ones I want to show? Right now it just shows random mags I'm not subbed to.

vauno,

Yeah, its the only gripe with the layout for me so far too. Haven't found out a proper solution yet

Trebach,

Click the thing between + and your username that looks like bullet points and text. A menu will appear. Click Subscribed and only the magazines you subscribed to will appear.

Of course the nice thing is that anyone can create a fediverse mobile app without restrictions.

But apparently, there’s a mobile app ‘coming soon’ - see the bottom of https://kbin.pub

Especially since the whole site is based on the free work of the mods and the users submitting content. The whole thing is like a Ponzi scam where the users and the mods are the lowest tier in the scam and reddit's admins and all the sites that get traffic through reddit are at the top.

There were so many ways reddit's owners could have gone about this and actually made money while making the userbase happy and not antagonizing their free labor.

    brianshatchet,

I put in a ridiculous amount of moderation work. I'm quite sad about it. I guess there's not really much of a choice anymore.

It's not like you've wasted that time, you made a community work for some amount of time and Reddit being done for does not change that

Well seems Greedy little Pigboy Steve huffman has got exactly the same Spirt as his fellow Redditors when it comes to the Strike, just means we'll have to continue forward and follow through to, The main effort current moderators should start working on is to help migrate as many people as possible to services like kbin and Lemmy, also to people who are Reddit mods, here's a tip: Make an Example of all the people saying that, Protests are stupid, aren't going to work, are a waste of time, you're gonna come crawling back etc. Ban them permenantly from your communities and call them out (in a mod-distinguished reply to their infringing message) as the trolls and scabs they are and show that this behavior isn't rewarded with status, dignity, or reputation.

    autumnplains,

I don’t love the fact that they discuss the blackmail allegation and then leave out the fact that Christian had a recording to disprove this. I’m glad they said he disputed it, but when there are tapes… you should probably say there are tapes.

    neus,
    neus avatar

behavior and communications with us has been all over the place—saying one thing to us while saying something completely different externally

Not sure if this is just spez talking about himself, not the Apollo dev. I also love that it also then adds like a "how dare they release the tapes proving me wrong". Maybe they wouldn't have to if you didn't try to pull this shit. Honestly it does sound bad in the recording with the contextual areas removed, but with full context you can see a point was trying to be made via a hypothetical about how if reddit truly believes these API prices are reasonable, such an "investment" by reddit would be considered a financial win for them. But its not, because the API prices are unreasonable and they know it. And spez fully apologizes in the call for misunderstanding, yet ignores that when he brings it up later. Scummy.

Reddit knows they’re only losing a small portion of their users. The users that are leaving, however, are the core users. They’re the moderators that keep the subreddits clean. The longtime users that have been providing quality content for 5+ years.

I think we’re going to see a drastic change in reddits content after this. I’ve already deleted my 11y account, but I’m going to keep an eye on the site over the next couple months (via old.reddit.com, of course) and see what happens.

I hope we’ll see websites like kbin grow and thrive. I already have confidence in the developers and maintainers, and so far the user base is amazing. Even though I have to use a web app on my iPhone, which does have some bugs, I’m already committed.

I would like to say, though, PLEASE provide feedback and suggestions for kbin. Let’s make this site what Reddit should have been. Let’s make it 1000% more appealing to would-be new Reddit users. We’ve all got this.

For kbin bugs and suggestions: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues

There isn't a native mobile app, but this website is what's known as a "progressive web application". This means that you can just add it directly to your home screen and it will act app-like. See this thread for exact iOS instructions. Android is similar but does depend on which browser you're using.

    DarkThoughts,

What does "app-like" mean? On Android it just opens the mobile site in Firefox.

    noodlejetski,

if you press the "More" button and choose "Install", you'll get a shortcut on your homescreen that will open the website in a separate window.

The install button won’t show up for me, when I tried that.

    noodlejetski,

sometimes it's just labeled "Add to homescreen". not sure if it's a change on Kbin's end and whether it'll behave the same way or open in a regular tab, though.

    abff08f4813c,
    abff08f4813c avatar

That one I have but it consistently just opens in a new tab. Not app like at all.

    noodlejetski,

yeah, I guess something's changed with Kbin's configuration over the past few days, then. I've still got the PWA "installed" and it shows separate from Firefox (you can see Firefox proper on the left side):

Which browser offers best "native-like" experience on Android?

    lysozyme,
    lysozyme avatar

I'm currently using DuckDuckGo browser (Chromium based if I'm not mistaken) and it works fine. My guess is that Chrome and Fennec (Firefox) will do fine.
For Android: navigate to your kbin instance and press the hamburger menu (the 3 lines or dots in your browser) and there should be a command like "install to home screen". Choose that command and a shortcut will be placed on your homwscreen and in your app drawer. Opening this shortcut will take you directly to your kbin instance.

BTW, you can use this the create shortcuts to basically every webpage. I've got shortcuts to my favorite webshops (including product filters and all)

    1984,
    1984 avatar

Hey, thanks! I know the "home screen" functionality and use it regularly. I asked because I use Fennec (Firefox mobile fork) primarily, but wanted to have one browser for kbin only, to keep it separate. I tried with Fennec and Bromite and felt it was a bit janky on Fennec and wasn't working properly on Bromite so just wanted to hear other people's thoughts and suggestions.

    sylar,

What a stupid take. “We’ll continue to be profit-driven until profits arrive. Unlike some of the 3P [third-party] apps, we are not profitable”. What if, I don't know, maybe... make the official app actually good so it becomes a viable competitor to the most used 3P apps? Then they would make money just like them, but no, they don't want fair competition, they want the whole cake. I really hope reddit dies.

    Balssh,
    Balssh avatar

Or have a fair price on their API. There were many things they could've done and still be profitable, but they decided to nuke everything. After they also lied about Christian, I too hope Reddit burns.

    bedbeard,

Anyone else around that was originally a Digg user? No matter how huge these sites get they can still implode from dumb decisions like Reddit is now making, even if it might not be overnight.

I do love the idea that this might finally push us into something more decentralised and not onto yet another huge centralised corporation site.

    ANuStart,

I was a Digg guy back in the day that fled for Reddit. This feels the same, however during the Digg meltdown we were fortunate that Reddit came around at the right time and was ready to take over for Digg with very little barrier to entry since it was familiar

Nothing really exists like that at the moment to take over from Reddit. There are things that are close but nothing like Reddit was to Digg.

It's just so interesting to me how palpable the sense of anger was in those responses. Seem to just be super angry that people are making a big deal out of this rather than rolling over. I think the fact that Christian was able to catch him in a lie with the alleged "threat" is a super sore point.

Very much wondering if they go scorched earth over some of this stuff at some point, feels like something like that may be in the air.

    st3ph3n,

I reckon they will start replacing mods on the multimillion subscriber subs with yes men and then they’ll reopen them if this goes on more than a few days.

    DovahKing,

Then the quality of those subs will plummet drastically because the only thing they know is how to lick boots.

And when those subs start flooding with undesirable content, they'll abandon it too.

    narizpecosa,

Then, it cascades, because any mods who were previously on the fence will decide "I'm out", and then Reddit need to replace them too.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some automated moderation being deployed rather than actual people.

    kylemsguy,

I got this too. It feels like spez was angry at anyone who called him out on his BS.

    Lo-Fi_Enchilada,

    • 48 hours of going ”dark” is going to accomplish jack shite but a couple of petty articles mocking how people couldn’t even survive more than 48 hours without their Reddits.

    • Popular subs extending their protest will be taken over by Reddit and be reopened to the public. Deleted subs will spawn substitutes. For every mod refusing to mod, there will be probably 100k nerds fighting over to do it. Everything is going back to business as usual.

And yeah, I’m sticking to Kbin, but I still see many issues that will prevent this whole fediverse-thing to attract or retain enough users to even make Reddit look behind. Hopefully with years of refinement this concept can provide the kind of easy access to info and communities that Reddit offers, but right now it’s very empty and not user/casual friendly.

    johnthedoe,

Watching the live stream of subs going dark made me remember just how many people are on Reddit. This is mass public. Old, young, tech savvy and illiterate.
I worry after this protest it'll be business as usual for 90+% of people on it.
I'm hopeful the people who left and came here or other platforms are the people that will spearhead a new community to attract the rest of Reddit's very broad userbase.
We've been burnt too many times by greed. We need to make decentralization stick this time.

    aha20395,

Right there with you if the core subs can be translated over here then kbin will grow just like reddit did.
