This is absolutely fucking creepy: researchers have used AI to turn common WiFi routers into essentially cameras: https://www.zmescience.com/feature-post/technology-articles/computer-science/wifi-router-sees-people-through-walls/

It's not , it's .

AND: there is so much more to hack in .

@agerber just because it's possible doesn't mean it should be done or widely documented how to do, especially as these devices live inside private spaces like people's homes.

E.g., Amazon Alexa already wanted to track people's movements within their own homes as to build up data to help them sell more.

And tech companies don't exactly have the best reputation for respecting privacy.

What I learned by working in is:
Do not rely on what someone should do (or not do)

rely only on what is possible or impossible by natural law (not by someones personal imagination).

Or, by the words of Eric Schmidt:
If You want something to be kept secret - don't do.

Means: everything which can be disclosed will be disclosed (even what happend in Vegas ... and the Fight Club).

@agerber that's a very American and doomsday-er way of looking at it, things hange if you require developers & companies to think about the harms that their code or products can bring to people.

Yes, things can become public that were meant to be private, but that doesn't mean we should create technology explicitly designed to breach a space that is assumed to be private (one's own home)

Decades ago, I shared that ethical mindset, too.
And, to be honest, I still do share this point of view as an ideal approach to the world.

Meanwhile, life changed my mind (not really my attitude to these #things).

If it's possible, it will be done - so: be prepared and not astonished.

Or, to say it with #alphaville:
"Hoping for the best but expecting the worst"

Sugarian,

@thisismissem How would it handle interference?

@coderbyheart I think that's distinctly separate, as rather than radio waves, it's using the visible light spectrum?

@thisismissem Yes, exactly. One of the features is that it does not permeate walls. Which makes eavesdropping much harder.
