Ugh. Pocket Git, another long time favorite Android app of mine, has disappeared from the Play Store—without an obvious replacement.

I don’t want to start developing Android apps, but dang, I could really use replacements for these:

• Straightforward git client (explicitly not an IDE)
• Package tracker that supports multiple carriers

I’ll design them if someone else can develop them? 😝

@cassidy dunno if this fits your bill, but someone recently recommended MGit: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.manichord.mgit&hl=en_US

@orsvarn I gave it a try but the Google Play version is broken (it tells you not to use it!), and the F-Droid version couldn't find my SSH keys, so…

tyil,

@cassidy Don't rely on a "store" owned by a giant corporate that wants nothing but total and complete control over you and your devices. Don't trust anything by one of those entities, I'd argue.

It looks like Pocket Git is proprietary too, at least I don't see any means to get to its source, so that may have been a big mistake too. Not sure why there's an OpenSource hashtag in your post if it's about proprietary software in a proprietary ecosystem, though.

I do see a huge list of gambling scam sites referred at the bottom of Pocket Git's website, for some reason. I don't think I want to know more about this software or its developer, nor support it in any way further by giving advice...

@tyil my point would be to design and develop an open source replacement.

I use F-Droid as well but the situation is no better there, either; the issue is that there are no good apps in the category.

@cassidy There seems to be many package tracking apps for Android. One that I just looked up had a 4.5 rating.

What are you looking for that isn't already on Google Play?

@FelicianoTech I previously posted about OneTracker specifically disappearing; I liked how it was super straightforward, didn't try to do a bunch of other things and just worked.

The others I've tried want a bunch of permissions (like access to my whole email account), advertise a bunch of other features (like a whole shopping experience, following other brands, shipping insurance…) and/or were just not well designed.
