https://www.techdirt.com/2023/12/11/apples-nonsensical-attack-on-beeper-for-making-apples-own-users-safer/

Apple’s "commitment to privacy" is much more a commitment to walled gardens and Apple’s bottom line, rather than the privacy of Apple’s users. and their attack on Beeper is proof of this, Beeper which simply brings full iMessage compatibility to Android is being attacked and sued by apple.

DadeMurphy,

@Theeo123 it’s only nonsensical if you’re a fucking moron. 🤦🏻‍♂️

@DadeMurphy

hey I didn't write the title. Take it up with the author over at TechDirt, he has a comment section.

DadeMurphy,

@Theeo123 No need. Just pointing out the idiocy of such an ignorant comment. Wasn’t calling you out directly.

@DadeMurphy

ahh ok wasn't sure.

I think the author meant their claims were nonsensical, not the act of them trying to protect their walled garden for the sake of profit.

But hey, I appreciate the clarification :)

DadeMurphy,

@Theeo123 Remove security from the equation, what you’re left with is an entity actively hacking iMessage to access proprietary software. 1/2

@DadeMurphy

I think there's a fine line between Hacking & reverse engineering, though, especially if at the heart of it Apple is using standardized encryption algorithm .

Apple trying to protect its IP, no, fair game, but Apple is the one claiming that it's a security issue, and the way they are going about the whole situation is all but laughable

DadeMurphy,

@Theeo123 So, you have no problem with beeper using their services illegally. Gotcha.

Theeo123,
@Theeo123@mastodon.social avatar

@DadeMurphy

Didn't say tha,t
1 "illegal" and "breaching terms of Service" are not the same

2: Apple is the one making it a security issue, in their court filings claiming that any other app using the same exact encryption, is somehow inferior and less secure.

If apple came right out and said "this is not allowed because they are accessing our service without permission", then that would be fine, but that's NOT how Apple themselves is framing it. that's my issue.

DadeMurphy,

@Theeo123 well, from a security perspective, it is a major problem.

I’m just trying to understand why people think Apple is the problem and not the company that illegally hacked their platform.

People have such disdain for iMessage that they are completely ok with a third party hacking iMessage,and somehow that’s Apple’s fault for shutting idown their access to proprietary software.. It’s pretty pathetic.

@DadeMurphy @Theeo123 nobody but Apple knows if there is a security problem, but considering their history of lies about security, there is zero reason to believe Apple yet.

Apple is entirely entitled to block their service to Beeper for whatever reasons they want. They just don’t seem upfront about the reasons why. Just like none of what Beeper is doing is either illegal or even hacking. You are using the wrong words.

DadeMurphy,

@ppn @Theeo123 you’re giving an unknown company your Apple credentials. You don’t need to be Apple to know that is a major security issue.

@ppn @DadeMurphy

Thank you, you have just said succinctly what I have been (horribly) trying to convey:)

Though looking at beepers info I highly highly highly doubt there are any security issues.

Most of their code is available on github: https://github.com/beeper

@DadeMurphy @Theeo123 if anything as a former Pebble user, I am more amazed that after all these years Migicovsky is still naive enough to launch a product like beeper and not fully consider that Apple would retaliate against how their protocols and services would be used.
