Welp, no mushrooms with dinner... the packet I got delivered today expired two weeks ago. (This is the third time in as many weeks I've had a well-expired item in my grocery delivery. I called head office and told them if it happens again, I'm going somewhere else).

The smoke detector went off 5 times in the 10 min the salmon was in the air fryer.

All in all, not the relaxing experience I'd hoped that cooking in my new place would be.

But the food was good!

@MsHearthWitch I love how traditionally Japanese your service is

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@consumablejoy Thank you!Truthfully that's the way I prefer to eat most days. It helps me get a good mix of veg and I love the whole concept behind it.

My goal is to eat ichiju sansai (this style) 4 or 5 days a week!

consumablejoy,
@consumablejoy@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Do you have a Japanese background, or perhaps a specific attraction to this style of eating?

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@consumablejoy I've always enjoyed Japanese food, but a few years ago I was Dxed with a serious dairy allergy. It was... A Bad Time™. It's a lot of mental gymnastics to change recipes. I turned to Japanese cuisine because it traditionally doesn't have dairy.

Around the same time it was early pandemic and I was really depressed. So I basically hyper-focused on Japanese ichiju-sansai style meals.

I found the Just One Cookbook blog and went to town! I've actually been featured on their IG!

@MsHearthWitch That’s awesome! And a brilliant way to avoid dairy.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@consumablejoy Yeah, some modern recipes use dairy. But overwhelmingly Japanese food doesn't have it. So it's perfect.

consumablejoy,
@consumablejoy@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Yeah one super weird thing about Japan was how much cheese there actually is. I feel like it’s their own kind of fusion. Like pasta with fish roe and chicken egg and cheese. Or the new cookies that are super popular with cheeses, like Gorgonzola and honey cookie.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@consumablejoy Yeah, I know modern Japanese food has cheese. But the traditional recipes don't, like almost at all.

The Ichiju sansai style emphasises just presenting the protein or veg in a simple but delicious way. Not overly complicated cooking stuff. Like, grilled, or blanched, or simmered, etc. It works well for me.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@consumablejoy Yeah, my love of Asian food in general has been a blessing. I've also found the ichiju sansai style in general (literally: one soup, three dishes) has been a great way to include a nice variety of meats and veg.

My goal is to learn enough Japanese to travel there one day and take a cooking class w/o needing a translator.

consumablejoy,
@consumablejoy@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch That is an amazing goal. But you should maybe go first anyway. When I was living there I took a spinning and weaving class even though I could not understand the instructor. It was still great (I had actually learned to weave before, in English, in the US, so that did make it easier).

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@consumablejoy Maybe. It'll be a long time before I'm able to travel to Asia anyways. Between covid and my elderly dog. So I've kind of set it as a "one day" daydream vs a specific goal.

@MsHearthWitch @consumablejoy I’d never heard of this, but I bookmarked your post and started looking up info on it. I am a very very lazy cook, but I may be able to find something to try!

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@Archergal @consumablejoy It's surprisingly simple! A lot of things can be made ahead of time which I really like. The JOC blog is awesome, and she often includes western substitutions for harder to find Japanese ingredients.

Archergal,
@Archergal@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch @consumablejoy I’ll def check it out!

@MsHearthWitch Dinner looks utterly scrumptious, though.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@elfkin It was super tasty! Although it really would have done well with a foraged mushroom medley cooked in garlic and butter :x

RE: expired food

I've tried to be understanding. The first time it happened I called the store directly. The CSR gave me a lot of grief but eventually did refund the item.

Second time, I'd put a note on the item "This was expired by a month last time. PLEASE check the date." And then it had the same month+ old date on it again. That time I called head office but was understanding.

This time not so much. Told them I was really tired of this. I pay for this service. Didn't yell, but was firm.

@MsHearthWitch That sounds very frustrating. Honestly, we get similar problems with order pickup from the local massive-chain-grocery-store.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@Willow It really is frustrating. And I've only started having problems recently. I have been a loyal customer for almost a decade. I was one of the first delivery customers when they started offering it!

But it absolutely fucks me up when I'm trying to make dinner and a main component is expired. And not like, a day or two, but WEEKS, MONTHS!

I really don't want to have to go back to doing the shopping myself. But this shit is fucking terrible.

Willow,
@Willow@chaosfem.tw avatar

@MsHearthWitch We’ll get expired cheese multiple orders in a row. 😤

I’m sorry that’s happening.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@Willow I'm sorry it's happening to you too :(

I've been kinda wanting to shop local more often at smaller shops. This might be the push to do that cuz I'm just so fed up.
