"The calorie gave the public its first penetrating view inside the foods they ate, providing an elementary understanding of #nutrition. But it would also go on to torment millions, enrich corporations, inspire generations of advertising campaigns, provoke widespread guilt and pride, and even, some argue today, ...instructing the masses to focus on calories rather than on nutrients and steering them toward highly processed carbohydrates."

"...The obesity epidemic is being driven by industrial chemicals known as endocrine disruptors in the environment that make their way into humans via the air, the water & the food supply... Many industrial chemicals mimic endocrine chemicals in the body thereby interfering with the body’s signaling system.
...We have a system that creates widespread obesity through chemical poisoning and then sells people weight-loss drugs to take off the excess weight. When the drugs are discontinued, the weight comes back.
...Ironically, these drugs work by interfering with the body’s appetite control system by making people feel less hungry and more full. This is the same system that endocrine disruptors interfere with in the opposite manner..."

"The rise of avocados from a delicacy to an everyman’s lunch on toast has launched cottage industries in home delivery that specialize in offering perfectly ripe fruit, or unique varietals grown throughout the year." —Cathy Erway for Taste Magazine
"Nestlé adds more sugar to baby food sold in lower- and middle-income countries, while more affluent markets get healthier versions, according to a recent report released by a nonprofit group.

Time to reduce the junk. Takeaway food is ethnic-flavoured fat, salt, and sugar. There is no reason takeaway food cannot be healthy, nutritious, and delicious. #food#nutrition#health#planetaryhealth
"Consumer Reports (CR), a consumer advocacy group, said it tested 12 store-bought versions of Lunchables — which are made by Kraft Heinz — along with similar lunch and snack kits and found “relatively high levels of lead and cadmium” in the Lunchables kits...There is not a safe level of lead for children, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes."
Whether you’re visiting Japan or just immigrated, it can take time to adjust to the local food culture. That’s especially true if you eat a specific kind of diet. Good news if you eat high protein, though. You have a handy – and ubiquitous – ally: 7-11.
"It’s raising concerns about their role in diet-related health outcomes such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, as our busy lifestyles may push us to reach for easy, quick, or low-cost, rather than cooking and eating more unprocessed or minimally processed foods like fruits, vegetables, eggs, nuts or seeds."
One company in particular, #GeneralMills, maker of CocoaPuffs & LuckyCharms cereals, has launched a multi-pronged campaign that capitalizes on the teachings of the #AntiDiet movement…. General Mills has toured the country touting anti-diet research it claims proves the harms of “food shaming” [it does harm, but doesn’t necessitate unhealthy food habits].
…Online dietitians—many of them backed by food makers—also are building lucrative followings by co-opting #AntiDiet msgs. Anti-diet hashtags…have proliferated on #SocialMedia.

🤔 In the last of the current series of Sliced Bread, Greg Foot investigates the fungi-fuelled trend for coffees, teas, even hot chocolates, that contain so called “medicinal mushrooms” - the likes of Reishi, Cordyceps, Chaga or Lion’s Mane.

I'm choosing to rationalize that Wheat Thins are healthy because they are made of 100% whole wheat flour. The ingredient list isn't actually pretty good for a snack food. #nutrition#food#fitness

When I started ramping up my exercise last year I latched on to the 20-40 grams per meal number. One thing that didn't make sense was the notion that the body doesn't use much of the >40 grams for muscle building. I follow some one-meal-a-day body builders and it is clear that they are. This is a deep dive into more recent research. TL;DR: for muscle building/maintaining efficacy all that really matters is eating enough protein/essential amino acids. Timing, sources, etc. is more of a marginal difference at best. Better to do what works for you sustainably. #fitness#exercise#training#nutrition Episode 73 - Does the timing of my protein matter? | Assistant Prof. Jorn Trommelen
