I finally did it. I used an LLM. A couple of months ago, MS added its Copilot to Windows. I turned it off. But the latest update shoved it back in my face and tried to get me to let it use my data. So I asked it a question: How do I get rid of Copilot? It suggested I uninstall it like any other program, but MS removed that option. But Copilot went on to tell me the exact registry key to change to block it from loading, and now it's gone.

US Department of Health and Human Services is proposing a new rule requiring hospitals to electronically report cases of respiratory illness such as COVID-19 on a weekly basis, even in the absence of a declared public health emergency.

Public comments on whether to adopt this policy are open.

Take a look at this person's flag choices. Ask yourself what similarity they see that brought them together. Take all the time you need.

WearsHats,
@WearsHats@realsocial.life avatar

@LiamOMaraIV That's easy. They're southern Evangelicals who believe in white Christian supremacy. They have supported Israel since the beginning because they believe that a fully Jewish state in the holy land is the key to triggering the Rapture.

Cooking revolutionized food safety so much that the appendix (which existed to try to deal with foodborne parasites) became vestigial. Germ theory led to pasteurization, vaccines, and sterile medical environments, which all but eliminated a whole swath of deadly infections.

Those measures were so successful that we have trends of raw diets, raw milk, antivaxxers, and anti-maskers because people don't remember why they're able to feel safe.

Ever since I broke my leg I sometimes trip. It's scary since I'm scared I'll land in a way that could set off a lot of pain. But what's worse is I'm not doing so great being reasonable about it after. I first feel very stupid for falling over, then upset that I'm so upset about something so stupid.

Whoever designed emotions was and idiot and should be fired.

Like obviously I have a mostly metal leg, not walking perfectly is normal. But I still beat myself up for not being more careful. WHY.

WearsHats,
@WearsHats@realsocial.life avatar

@futurebird We all suffer from internalized ableism. I'm sorry you're coping with that. But... are you using a cane? It took me way too long to admit that I needed one. I was scared of what others would think/say. But I was so much better off with it, and no one ever questioned it, even though I was in my 20s (and looked like a teenager). Got a pretty nice stylish cane, too, which felt cool.

WearsHats,
@WearsHats@realsocial.life avatar

@futurebird Ah, yeah. That would be very disorienting. Hopefully you'll get into new habits that work better. Always takes a while to relearn your stride.

We need a teach-in so ALL AMERICANS understand what ACTUAL powers a presidents has. MAGATs are not the only confused and undereducated people in this nation.

WearsHats,
@WearsHats@realsocial.life avatar

@StillIRise1963 Can we please include SCOTUS in that? As students. They need a refresher course. And one on the Second Amendment (which says in its own text that it only exists to arm the National Guard) while we're at it...

The past couple weeks I’ve been embracing silence. Max 1 hour TV/ day, no background music while I work, no music at all with vocals, etc.

This morning I sat still in the back yard with a cup of tea and I heard EVERYTHING. The breeze through the treetops; a half dozen different bird calls; a squirrel scuttling on the top of the fence; distant sounds of traffic. It was exhilarating!

WearsHats,
@WearsHats@realsocial.life avatar

@imtheq Funny you mention that. I just read an article this week about John Cage's 4'33" (a musical composition consisting of 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence) and how it's supposed to make you contemplate all the little sounds in your environment that you'd otherwise ignore. Specifically, a professor at Columbia cut it from his music class this year because what students would have been hearing was the protest outside.

🎯 Via Jim sciutto:

The script-flipping here is a remarkable: rather than focus on the severity and precedent of what’s before them - whether should be prosecuted for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election - they appear focused on the potential for a future president to be frivolously prosecuted. There appears to be little concern among the conservative justices for the substance and significance of the case.

WearsHats,
@WearsHats@realsocial.life avatar

@GottaLaff Should be simple. If other Presidents want to avoid prosecution, they should uphold the law and not do crimes. Although even Nixon, Reagan, and Bush managed to avoid it...

So, the nazi Speaker of the House is going to speak to Jewish students on campus. Hmmmm.

WearsHats,
@WearsHats@realsocial.life avatar

@StillIRise1963 He's having security walk him past the Jewish students on campus who are protesting against the war, so that he can instead pretend to be concerned about antisemitism. For his own End Times antisemitic reasons. And so he can make a speech decrying educational institutions that don't brainwash kids with right wing talking points.

Thank you, Associated Press, for getting this subhead right.

Amazing they can charge for the feature (which is just a software update, since the cars already had the sensors it uses) when it's still so far short of actually working.

"The Why Files" is a youTube channel that regularly has videos with over a million views. They started as a kind of paranormal/fringe science channel that was mostly harmless, and that often debunked conspiracies.

But, they've moved beyond that in to material such as suppressed patents for cars that run on water. And treating climate change like it's a unresolved question. This has made their audience grow.

The things is they aren't just spitting lies. 1/

I remember seeing an article. I can't seem to find it again. But something akin to these two:

https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/06/a-dangerous-question-does-internet-advertising-work-at-all/372704/

https://slate.com/technology/2014/06/online-advertising-effectiveness-for-large-brands-online-ads-may-be-worthless.html

They're a decade old, but they make a good case that most online ads don't work, or at least not well. Besides, our brains filter out most ads by just refusing to pay attention to them.

@imtheq I believe in you! And weird people are the best. "Normal" is just a way of calling someone boring, unimaginative, and/or conformist. And I think every author struggles to convey what they want, and worries they're doing it wrong. The only way to do it is to keep going. Push through and learn from experience.

A few weeks back I encountered a FOSS guy here explaining that when he sees open source devs ask for money, he blocks them and then stops using their code because they're morally wrong and he only wants to work with tools made by people who are doing the work for the right reasons. (I'm paraphrasing to avoid indexing the post.)

I've resisted writing about it because I'm slammed, but the question I can't shake is: Who benefits from the ideology of "pure" volunteerism?

WearsHats,
@WearsHats@realsocial.life avatar

@kissane Does this guy think that there are no paid staff at the local food pantry? At the art museum? The Trevor Project? That none of those are worthy of donations? You can have a non-profit that provides free services, and maybe it's largely staffed by volunteers, but still need to pay for operating costs and the labor and expertise of core staff.
