Iโ€™m honestly sick of seeing โ€œM$โ€ or โ€œMicro$oftโ€ or โ€œMicroshaftโ€. So the filters from the days of birdsite are coming back.

If youโ€™re going to be childish with using name calling as an attempt at a jab, itโ€™ll not be visible over here.

And people wonder why they arenโ€™t taken seriously with their arguments against using a product. ๐Ÿ™„

Hilariously, I wonโ€™t even see this toot on my own timeline. lol

@ironicbadger Sending ๐Ÿซ‚.

Reddit has become a cesspool of shit. Much like SomethingAwful Forums did before it. Thereโ€™s good people still in both, but only in specific niches, whereas the rest of the site can piss off.

Sorry my dude. ๐Ÿซ‚ You deserve better and to know that you are appreciated.

still insane to me that the US is so self absorbed that they literally consider themselves "the government". they just went ahead and decided .gov domains are for the US government while everyone else has to do like .gov.uk (or just puts up with a normal tld). god i hate the US

ktnjared,
@ktnjared@bitbang.social avatar

@lea I mean, when you fund the creation of the concept of it through DARPA, you get to call the shots.

And now IANA classifies .gov is an sTLD, paid for by DHS.

Should also be noted that .gov isn't just the US government in the federal senseโ€ฆ state and local municipal governments in the US can be used for it too (like maryland.gov or cityoffrederickmd.gov); heck even election offices are considered eligible now.

ktnjared,
@ktnjared@bitbang.social avatar

@lea And on top of that, those types of entities in the US that donโ€™t have .gov TLDs are being asked by CISA and the FBI to move to the .gov TLDs instead of the .com, .net, .org, .us, or whatever else some local government agency is using. So get used to seeing more of them in the next few years.

Distributed.net has a NetBSD/vax client, which appears to still work ...

ktnjared,
@ktnjared@bitbang.social avatar

@ncommander Wow. Talk about blast from the past. It's wild that after 14 years since the last client update that the NetBSD stuff still works OOB.

Oh hell, just looked, and the vax version hasn't been touched in 20 years. WOW.

I participated in the RC5-56, RC5-64, RC-72 (a long time ago, when it started), and OGR-28 comps. Maybe I should toss some wasted compute cycles their way. โ™ฅโ€ฟโ™ฅ

this is the truly depressing reality of macos software development

my OS - macos (big sur) - is three years old.

developers, i know this stuff is harder to make backwards-compatible, but jesus

edit: replyguys: i've been developing software for macOS for 20 years. i don't need to hear excuses about why you feel it's difficult to do.

@vga256 Pretty much.

Especially for something as esoteric as Hotline.

Aside: I had no idea Hotline was even still around as a concept, let alone with a community.

What was the first movie you ever saw in the theater?

Mine: Bambi

ktnjared,
@ktnjared@bitbang.social avatar

@gedeonm The Care Bears Movie or Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer. Those are the earliest ones I can vaguely remember seeing in theaters at least (I was 5).

If it was something else, I have no idea. ^_^ ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

ktnjared,
@ktnjared@bitbang.social avatar

@gedeonm I will say that I do still very well remember the first tramatizing movie I saw in theaters: Transformers: The Movie.

My 6 year old, Transformers-loving self did not do well with the beginning of that film, though I did make it all the way through. I respect it now, but that was trama that still has a nugget sitting back there somewhere.

@sindresorhus Quick Q: Is Pure Paste or Velja tracking parameter removal expected to remove Instagram "isgh" parameters?

I only just noticed that it is making its way to the address bar, but it is being removed by StopTheMadness before the browser executes the URL.

I can submit feedback via your site if it's supposed to, but I wanted to verify if that was a tracking parameter you expected to block in the first place. ^_^

Other good ideas:

  • Mac OS 9 (macos9lives.com has an image for the G4 Mac mini)
  • Mac OS X? Jaguar? Tiger? Sorbet Leopard
  • MorphOS (Has been my main purpose for mine for years now)
  • A BSD of some flavor?
  • T2-SDE
  • Adรฉlie or some modern Linux flavor?
  • Old-school Linux flavor, like Red Hat Linux (pre-Fedora stuff), Mandrake PPC, Yellowdog Linux, etc.

Hey guys, please help with a problem here:

  • I've been using Dissenter web browser, but sadly it became abandoned/obsolete, so I was forced to use Brave. However I noticed a problem with CDRomTokyo: it gets blank, same problem at the android phone. And I get so many issues at MiniDisc Tokyo too. Why?
    Should I use another web browser?

Please recommend me a good web browser for Linux and android so I could use those sites that I like so much.

ktnjared,
@ktnjared@bitbang.social avatar

@aldi80s Firefox. Especially, as an Android user, now that addons have been re-enabled. https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2023/12/14/a-new-world-of-open-extensions-on-firefox-for-android-has-arrived/

CDRomTokyo seems to work fine, both in desktop and mobile.

Minidisc.Tokyo seems to be behaving so far from futzing around as well.

And this is with stronger-than-strict security settings and a handful of blocking and security add-ons active and running.

(Tested current Firefox on macOS & Fedora (rpm-ostree and Flatpak versions) with user-agents and devtools tweaks)

Excited to soon celebrate 4 years of not getting sick even once. Have to focus on the good whilst heading into pandemic year 5

ktnjared,
@ktnjared@bitbang.social avatar

@eniko You SHOULD be celebrating it!

I don't think it is a negative on anyone who has tried to avoid it but has inevitably gotten it, but it is definitely a Bravo! You rock! thing to be proud of and celebrate that you've taken steps to protect yourself and those around you and have been successful.

My wife and I are the only two in our families and IRL friend groups that haven't gotten it. We're practically hermits compared to the others, but it has meant not getting sick.

@kiwa Fondly ๐Ÿ˜. The CRTs in those were amazeballs. Honestly, the speakers were awesome as well. Once they became available for consumers, it was an easy and cheap way to get into a Mac. Sure, it wasn't fancy like the iMac G4, but they were still really, really nice.

No one in the DC area wanted to work on them, but our ARS always would.

ktnjared,
@ktnjared@bitbang.social avatar

@ActionRetro Oh the memories.

I was fully in my post-Windows, SuSE 7.x full-time phase (before moving to Mac OS X in the mid-00s), and a buddy of mine was into Lindows/Linspire and Xandros.

It was surprisingly good for the time, all things considered. Other things werenโ€™t really ready, but the concepts were in the right place.
