“It’s not fair to compare to Mastodon because Mastodon has been around for years and Bluesky has just been released.”

Actually, Bluesky has been in development since 2019.

That means it’s 3 years younger than Mastodon, and 1 year younger than ActivityPub’s validation by the W3C.

There’s also the matter of BlueSky receiving $13 million in funding while Mastodon receives $32,000/month from Patreon.

All things considered, it’s @Gargron who’s the underdog here.

The other way to look at is that this is what they’ve built after four years in development and $13 million in funding.

Dustin4,

@atomicpoet this is the point that I’ve said makes Mastodon so impressive.

Built with soup cans and dental floss compared to BlueSky/ATs backing

@atomicpoet and Mastodon did more with less.

Of course, I realize that most people don’t care that this is a non-profit going against a Silicon Valley-funded corporation.

For the same reason most people don’t care about whether their food is organic vs. factory farmed.

But to those who do care, that should give them context about who builds what and how.

@atomicpoet
Organics (and I'm not convinced they're any better than the alternatives) have a direct effect on the consumer's pocketbook. I think no one has a number on the tangible costs to consumers when their data is sold.
The latter is the principle. And if my person were up for sale I should at least get a cut

seth,

@atomicpoet Honest, let them have their cake. Mastodon isn't going anywhere. Neither is the Fediverse.

krschwarz,

@atomicpoet @Gargron Long live Mastodon!

@atomicpoet @Gargron Totally agree, trying to work out how Bluesky has so adeptly generated so much free advertising via the media. Must have been this clever "exclusivity" perception they created with their invitations.

@atomicpoet I still don't understand all the posts and articles about . The only users there came after an invitation. How can you compare this artificial community to anything else?

It's too early to decide anything.

@atomicpoet @Gargron it’s also not fair to compare a site with 2 orders of magnitude less people on it. Pretty easy to have a quality site if it’s invite only.

@atomicpoet @Gargron ...I don't understand how Bluesky trumps Mastodon. Truthfully. I'm on it, but seem to be missing the allure? Far fewer features, far less useful mobile app, non-existent discovery mechanics, etc. For anyone who complained about Mastodon, there are seemingly no overt wins?

@atomicpoet @Gargron @Gargron has done what many of us often thought should be done, but never did.
