If Lemmy is not your cup of tea as an alternative to Reddit, maybe try open-source federated Kbin instead

Yes, Reddit is going through its own API pains right now, and of course it is anyway a centralised social network much like Facebook and Twitter. So the discussion around alternatives has been coming up again.

Lemmy has been around for a while, its technol ...continues

Would be nice to see an app for Kbin, I'd certainly given it a look, if, or when that happens..🤷🏻‍♂️

danie10,
@danie10@mastodon.social avatar

@fisco1791 I haven't tested the mobile web view yet, but often that does work perfectly well - only thing that may be missing is push notifications.For other apps I've then saved that link as a home screen icon and it looks and feels like a mobile app.

fisco1791,

@danie10
Apparently there is an app in the works, but I may well try what you suggest, if I get the itch to have a look around Kbin.. thank you👍🏻

HeadPlug,

@danie10 I'm confused how I can browse magazines from Mastodon? Or post to them?

danie10,
@danie10@mastodon.social avatar

@HeadPlug Kbin is on ActivityPub so there is federation. I was seeing Mastodon post on the microblogging view in Kbin (not on the Mastodon side). From Mastodon I think you'd have to just follow a Kbin profile, but you'll only see their posts, and not see actual Magazine views of topics. You can't subscribe to the Magazines as far as I know, just profiules with posts.

And it looks like @JungleGeorge24 was already there on

JungleGeorge24,

@danie10 somebody said I'm collecting Fediverse accounts like infinity stones, I guess it's true 😅🤣

danie10,
@danie10@mastodon.social avatar

@JungleGeorge24 yep its an addiction. I'm trying to hold off on Kbin as I already had at Lemmy and Beehaw ;-)

JungleGeorge24,

@danie10 was just reading an interesting blog post about lemmy and kbin

https://www.jayeless.net/2023/06/on-reddit-and-alternatives.html

danie10,
@danie10@mastodon.social avatar

@JungleGeorge24 interesting, yes Kbin has some good things going for it. Whilst Beehaw is nicer to be on than Lemmy, it does not allow new subreddits/magazines to be registered, has no downvotes, and does not have the blog concept Kbin has.

A top priority for imo should be better thumbnail display for images and embedding integrations. ✨️ :fedi:

Seeing much of the focus is on sharing and voting on content that originates elsewhere from other sites like Twitch, YouTube and more - it need to be fast, viewable, and enjoyable to scroll through.

Right now thumbnails are stretched and cropped which gives a bad viewing experience. A thing to note though, is that mobile never ever perfected this and is a glitchy mess to this day on Android browsers unless you use their app.

fisco1791,

@cragsand @danie10
Third party apps did a far better job of displaying reddit content, the proprietary app, is not worth bothering with anyway..

cragsand,

@fisco1791 @danie10
I never tried any and seems I probably won't get a chance with the insane API changes they're doing.

fisco1791,

@cragsand @danie10
Probably a bit late now....hopefully some of those 3rs party devs, will make the switch to Lemmy or Kbin 🤷🏻‍♂️

cragsand,

@fisco1791 @danie10
Now that would be something wouldn't it?

The directing all users to sign up to alternatives to continue using the app! :fedi:

With so many users using or other third party apps that would surely be a grand entrance to decentralization!

fisco1791,

@cragsand @danie10
That would certainly make things interesting.....wonder if the present instances could cope with that kind of growth...🤷🏻‍♂️

danie10,
@danie10@mastodon.social avatar

@fisco1791 they could cope if it spreads out across instances, but I remember Mastodon did take massive strain initially (or should I say by the 2nd or 3rd wave).

But we can rely on the masses to be slow to change ;-)

fisco1791,

@danie10 Yes, some mastodon instances, struggled a bit, with the various influxes, I cant actually see any major shift from Reddit though, more of a trickle ...

danie10,
@danie10@mastodon.social avatar

@cragsand yes it would actually be quite a good way. But from what I saw with a different app was, they said they'd have to rewrite the entire app. There is a gathering trend it seems anyway to move to decentralised social networking, but I just hope it all stays interconnected and does not fragment even more. We still have XMPP, IRC, Diaspora, etc all out there too.

danie10,
@danie10@mastodon.social avatar

@fisco1791 well no changes yet. All the 3rd party apps are still going strong. I expect there will be some pull back on this, as many of the 3rd party app users are also those who generate a lot of the content on the site. The users create and drive content, not Reddit itself ;-)

fisco1791,

@danie10 Yes they are for now, but didn't twitter push on with their API limitations & pricing regardless of those third party apps that's it killed off, being used by heavily followed accounts, & content creators ... 🤷🏻‍♂️

danie10,
@danie10@mastodon.social avatar

@fisco1791 yes Twitter pulled back for private individuals and also public benefit organisations I think, but I had masses of issues getting my own API access all re-tuned again. It was the wakeup call though for many to realise you could not rely on building notifications services etc on a privately owned API.

fisco1791,

@danie10 May well have given some concrssions, but that didn't save the third party apps...🤷🏻‍♂️

danie10,
@danie10@mastodon.social avatar

@fisco1791 the 3rd party apps are under threat by the API costs now...

fisco1791,

@danie10
Yes that seems to be the reason to look elsewhere, as the Official Reddit app is, a buggy cluttered mess....Once those third apps are effectively locked out, then I & many, will just turn thier backs on Reddit.
