What does following and tagging a @group offer different to following and using a #hashtag?

#mastodon #group

Can't sleep. I guess not all those following a # would necessarily be following the group. Probably see more people by following the #.

See here: https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-groups-on-the-fediverse/

In particular the "Groups federate content more effectively than hashtags" bit. In short, you're never guaranteed to see all hashtagged posts. This problem is especially bad on a small or niche server. But if you follow a group, you're guaranteed to get all the messages posted to it. Groups are more reliable.

Also, you can put a group in a list and set that list to "Hide these posts from home" so they don't clog your timeline.

You can't put hashtags in lists, so you can't, for instance, put #COYS and #MastodonFC in a list and hide those posts from home. But you can put @spurs and @soccer and @epl in a list and hide those messages from home. It makes sense when you try it.
