The system-wide IT shop UNICC has announced its move to :

@downey UK based COMPANY element? ... CEO and co founder?....

So it's a company named element, not the open source project.

Would that open then up to lawful interception by UK legislation? And why not run their own infra? I'm confused

@B4ckBOne

ESS is a self-hosted deployment for homeserver management, and also provides client software, along with technical support.

I don't know the specific implementation details here. But AFAIK, it's still the case that UNICC run data centers are at least capable of offering international jurisdiction.

@downey thank you for the follow-up! Much appreciated

@B4ckBOne @downey Element (element.io) is the UK HQ’d company which maintains the open source Element project (github.com/element-hq) and distributes it as Element Server Suite (ESS). UNICC is using ESS and running it themselves on their own infra - which is the whole reason why you’d use Element & Matrix in the first place :)

@element @downey did not expect to get this level of attention. So please know that I'm truly grateful for it.
Is the element server stack based on the python synapse server? And did you have a code audit? Sorry, I'm a little curious 🙃😇

@B4ckBOne @downey yup, element server suite is based on synapse. bits of the code have been audited, although we will do a full end-to-end audit once element x lands fully.

@downey element can replace email?

@boud@framapiaf.org avatar

@furbyonsteroids @downey

Mostly sounds very positive!

But:

"... these organizations have replaced all their email ... with the Element app ... Element to secure our communications with partners, replacing email, ... "

Unless Element is running an email server for UNICC, that sounds like UNICC will try to convince UN staff/volunteers to stop using email. If they're currently using MS Outlook, that's understandable, but better would be to also get secure email e.g. .

@downey Hurray!

@matrix this is awesome!
