@B4ckBOne @downey Element (element.io) is the UK HQ’d company which maintains the open source Element project (github.com/element-hq) and distributes it as Element Server Suite (ESS). UNICC is using ESS and running it themselves on their own infra - which is the whole reason why you’d use Element & Matrix in the first place :)

element,
@element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@B4ckBOne @downey yup, element server suite is based on synapse. bits of the code have been audited, although we will do a full end-to-end audit once element x lands fully.

NEW: WhatsApp will soon make it possible to chat with people who use other messaging apps. It's revealed some more details on how that will work.

— Apps will need to sign an agreement with Meta, then connect to its servers.
— Meta wants people to use the Signal Protocol, but also says other encryption protocols can be used if they can meet WhatsApp's standards
— WhatsApp has been testing with Matrix in recent months, although nothing is agreed yet. Swiss app Threema says it won't become interoperable

@Polychrome @mattburgess it’s us testing interop with WA, using Matrix - not the Matrix.org Foundation (as the article says :)

Listening to @matthew at #Fosdem24 talking about messaging #interoperability following the #DMA and it's mindboggling to see how tiny corps like @element, #Wire and #Wickr invest in building the next generation #e2ee protocol.

#DigitalMarketsAct

element,
@element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@ilumium @feliks @matthew mm? wickr isn’t dead; they’re just doing enterprise/govt only. and they are definity participating in both MIMI and MLS.

element,
@element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@feliks @ilumium we don't endorse wickr at all. we just commented that they are members of the MIMI working group in IETF, alongside Element and Wire and many others.

The "friends don't let friends use proprietary chat services" slide is talking about Matrix.

I'm really getting sick of @element lately. 😩 It seems like every new release of the iOS client brings more problems and fixes none of the existing bugs. It's becoming such a chore to keep using it. 😞

Plus the whole "we're now focussed on working on Element X and not really supporting the old client" even though Element X is missing major features that mean it's not a replacement for the old one. Ugh!

element,
@element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@Marcus Sorry 😞 We just do not have the staff to both build Element X (to get decent performance, and fix encryption issues in one place via the rust-sdk) and maintain the classic apps: they have been in critical-fix-only-mode since June. That said, Element X is evolving super quick and has almost all features now, other than threads & spaces, which should hopefully help? This slide from FOSDEM spells out the problem (and puts the AGPL shift in perspective).

element,
@element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@Marcus notifications on Element iOS & Android should be reliable (even if the apps aren't in active development). Element Web has been a complete mess this year, but should almost entirely be fixed now. Please do report unreliable notifs, even on the classic apps

element,
@element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@Marcus okay, please can you point at the GH one here, just so we're looking at the same thing?

Today we launch a new fundraiser, talk about the scope of the Foundation's work, and begin to unpack our emerging roadmap for the future 🚀

There is a lot going on and we need your help to keep it going!

element,
@element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@lutindiscret @matrix yup; the majority of the Matrix core team is still employeed by Element to work on github.com/matrix-org/*. This works out at a cost of around £3M/y (even taking into account the fact that Element no longer donates its development on Synapse to the Foundation).

I am seriously begging @element to implement proper "mark as read" functionality in matrix. Seriously, I should not have to go thread by thread every single day for threads I don't care about and mark them each as individually read by opening and scrolling and closing each thread.

The right-click channel -> “mark as read" does not work.

element,
@element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@thisismissem right-click mark as read should work. if not, can you give repro steps in github.com/element-hq/element-web/issues please?

element,
@element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@thisismissem https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-js-sdk/pull/4022 may have fixed this - are you able to try on develop.element.io to see?

element,
@element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

@thisismissem cool. latest Nightly should have this too and will be in next release. sorry for the nightmare of stuck notifications; it should almost be over now.

    Join us in calling for EU member states to ensure that the CSA regulation does not introduce mandatory scanning and backdoors.

    A safer internet is a safe space for all, with respect for fundamental rights such as the right to privacy. Introducing scanning and backdoors is essentially mandating the introduction of vulnerabilities that would make all forms of communication less safe.

    We stand united against attempts to introduce mass scanning and surveillance.

    @glowl@chaos.social avatar

    WTH @RocketChat why the hell are accessibility features like high contrast themes only available with "Enterprise"?! Do this with things that do not exclude people based on their disabilities.

    What is being done there is straight up discrimination!

    element,
    @element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

    @glowl @matrix np. fwiw, Element (as a Matrix client) does not gate accessibility features, and aims for AAA high contrast by default - see https://element.io/blog/element-is-accessible-by-design/

    @matrix@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

    Following up on last month's news about Synapse and Dendrite, @element has begun implementing its planned forks, starting with Synapse.

    We recommend reading their latest blog post for details: https://element.io/blog/synapse-now-lives-at-github-com-element-hq-synapse/

    The Foundation is pleased to see that, not only do the forked projects remain under an open source license, but Element binds itself, through the CLA, to keeping 3rd party contributions in the open source commons.

    element,
    @element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

    @chebra It's our CLA, not @matrix's, so you're complaining at the wrong org. No, the CLA doesn't let Element relicense arbitrarily at later time without consent of contributors - it'd have to stick with an OSI-approved FOSS license. Yes, the CLA lets Element build commercial features on top of those contributions; other folks wanting to do so will need an AGPL exception.

    element, to random
    @element@mastodon.matrix.org avatar

    In order to help fund development, Element has now switched to the AGPLv3 for its contributions to Synapse and will continue development at https://github.com/element-hq/synapse - please update your git checkouts.

    Read all about the rationale and specifics at: https://element.io/blog/synapse-now-lives-at-github-com-element-hq-synapse/
