For those new to Mastodon, here are some handy tips on getting the most out of your experience:

You can always un-follow them later, if you want to 😋
Also, click on and then follow hashtags that interest you, like #Music or #Books or #ClimateChange or especially #FollowFriday, and discover more good people to follow.
Plus: put these people in lists so it's less overwhelming. You can dip in to start the day with your Friends list, and maybe "Good vibes" at lunch and save News for the evening or weekend for example.
Set up columns in your client. For mobile, choose a client that handles list-making and list-viewing well.
(I recommend @megalodon on android. There are others, too).

I think that even more important than follow a lot of people is to interact a lot with people. Comment, boost and like toots will make your mastodon experience much better.
@breadandcircuses this was my approach as well: follow everyone and anyone that seems remotely interesting; follow back anyone that follows you.
Similarly, my intent was to ‘weed the garden’… That part hasn’t gone so well—everyone here is so interesting that my ‘garden’ is up to 2300+ accounts (and counting). 😀

@breadandcircuses yep, I was using the app. Looks like you have to go to the desktop version to follow hashtags right now. But that's okay, I figured it out in the end lol. Thanks for helping a stranger!
@breadandcircuses I mean, you don't have to follow a lot of people, but those are usually the people who complain that they aren't getting anything out of Mastodon lol
