CaptainEffort, in PSA: Search for communities across all Lemmy instances with this site

This is great! Just wish there was a way to sort by subscribers.

loopy,

@kiwi is working on a directory for Lemmy. I think it had total subscribers at one point, but I’m only seeing users/month now. Maybe that’s in the works.

The link is here, check it out: https://www.lemmy.directory/communities/listing_type/All/page/1-

p7mriwqg6gvsqxi, in Unable to log in from any browser

Had the same problem on mobile with the spinning wheel on the login button. I’m using a password manager to fill the fields and remembered that on some sites, the auto-fill messes with the web page and the values are not properly handled by the login process for some reason. So took a chance and copied pasted my password by hand and it finally logged in! May be worth a try if you haven’t already.

p7mriwqg6gvsqxi,

Ho I found why it wasn’t working when using my password manager: the password length must not be higher than 60 characters. When typing/pasting a value manually in the password field, the web page automatically « trims » the excess I guess, but when using auto-fill with a password manager, something gets broken. I changed my password to one with a length of 60 (was using 128 before) and now it logs in correctly every time with my password manager.

somethingclever, (edited )

That might be it, I usually have a default password length in the 70s. I'll try that after work and see what happens

Update: This actually worked. I was able to log in on Firefox by copy/pasting, changed my password to under 60 characters, and now I can log in everywhere without a problem. There's a chance it was a coincidence, since I hadn't tried logging in for a day or so, but it's definitely working now. Thanks for this; I never would have thought of it on my own.

p7mriwqg6gvsqxi,

Glad you got it working!

Sendbeer,

I know this is late, but THANK YOU!!! I had been trying so many things like disabling ad blockers and Private DNS, browser settings, etc and didn't even consider my password manager. Probably should keep this in mind going forward!

SmugBedBug, in Can we enable 2FA?

This would be a great feature to have.

With all those rumors going around it isn't even a surprise anymore lol

I'm guessing this is getting officially announced during the Xbox event, when is it btw?

Yeah, I saw the Xbox logo so I figure that's when. Idk the timing though

Is there any word if this is coming to PlayStation? I would be a little surprised if it was an XBox exclusive, but Atlus rarely makes reasonable decisions when it comes to the consoles it outputs games on...

thegibs, in Close to switching to a Linux distro full time.

For people who use Linux full time, how is VR support on it? Is ALVR a viable alternative to Virtual Desktop/Link? And do VR games run well or at all through Proton?

asexualchangeling,

I haven't tried it in a long while so I'd also like to know how ALVR is these days, I haven't tried it in a while and have heard it's gotten some big updates lately

Last time I tried it though (close to a year ago) it had quite a ways to go

Squiddles,

I have an Index and it was seamless for me. Everything runs fine in Proton, and I didn't have any performance issues with my 2070 super. Tried the same games in Windows and it was the same experience, plus a couple of FPS (I assume because it wasn't going through DXVK). Can't speak to your other questions, though--those are outside of my experience.

CaptainEffort, in welcome, new Beehaw users and lurkers. an FAQ and introduction to Beehaw

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I was wondering how downvoting works across instances.

So, when I go to a community from another instance, I still don't have access to the downvote button. Is that a bug? It's not a big deal either way, but I was also wondering if someone from another instance comes here, can they downvote us?

as far as i'm aware if you're on an instance where downvotes are disabled, it globally disables them for you (since you have to access other federated communities through your own). but downvotes from other places do nothing here even if they're enabled on those other places and even if people can see the downvote button.

CaptainEffort,

I figured that was why I couldn't downvote on other instances, thanks for clearing that up! Honestly, I'm fine with that. I think not having the option actually makes me less aggressive lol.

And that's good to know that others can't just come here and downvote everyone. Again, thanks for clearing this up for me, I appreciate it!

stanleytweedle, in Reddit's r/sysadmin mods have chosen NOT to participate in the blackout

I'm looking at a post saying they are going dark and even offer Lemmy/c/sysadmin as an alternative. Am I missing something?

Catsrules,

I thought the same thing but i believe that was just a random user asking if they will go dark.

Is the actual mod post about this.

Jumuta,
zaktmt, in ESPN: Dalvin Cook to Be Cut by Vikings After Trade Rumors; Dolphins, Broncos Eye RB

Loved Dalvin during his time here in Minnesota. I'm gonna miss him. He was exactly what we needed when we moved on from Adrian.

But 28 years-old and his usage has been fairly high. I'm fairly hopeful the Vikings will adopt a committee this year to keep everyone's legs fresh. Mattison doesn't really have the same burst as Dalvin, so I am curious who steps then. McBride? Ty Chandler? I don't see Kene Nwangwu being more than a returner. So I'm skeptical with him. But I would like to be wrong. I would guess Ty Chandler is RB2 as of right now. But McBride was awesome at UAB. Though I am concerned about his lack of experience as a receiver in the passing game.

Cl1nk, in Idea/Draft: A common set of instructions for new users that could be pinned across instances.

How do I log-in in the jerboa app? Every time I try to click a button it says "login first" but I can't find any place to put my credentials.

Am I doing something wrong or the app is bugged?

PCChipsM922U,
@PCChipsM922U@sh.itjust.works avatar

Tap on the hamburger button in the upper left corner. On the top it says "Anonimous" (or something like that, can't remember), tap on that. It will give you an option to add an account. Add your credentials with the instance (username@instance.com). That should be it.

Cl1nk,

Awesome! I couldn't find that, the text is white on a light background. Thanks for pointing it out

bees_knees, in welcome, new Beehaw users and lurkers. an FAQ and introduction to Beehaw

In jerboa, when I read a post from another instance, if I downvote a comment, it says "downvote disabled". Is this a bug, or can I really not use the downvote button on other instances because I am registered here?

KeefChief12,

Its been a hard hit realizing this group does not allow downvotes.

alyaza,
@alyaza@beehaw.org avatar

i'm pretty sure it's the second thing, and that's inbuilt to lemmy so there's not much we can do about it without also opening up the entire community to downvotes. these should probably be separately configurable or something but that's a niche request, so it is what it is
