Google engineers want to make ad-blocking (near) impossible https://stackdiary.com/web-environment-integrity/ Is anyone surprised?

@Npars01@mstdn.social avatar

@nixCraft

I've stopped using certain web sites because of excessive & intrusive ads and shut off certain settings that enable ads & other pop-ups.

Not using Google or Chrome is coming soon.

Google investors are Saudi despots.

Coercive capitalism, public corruption, and captive consumer markets describe the oil kleptocracy of OPEC and accurately.

@ajsadauskas@aus.social avatar

@nixCraft Oh, Google's not completely opposed to you getting rid of some of its ads...

...by paying $14.99 for a YouTube Premium subscription, and then forking out even more for a Google Workspace subscription, and buying the paid version of apps on the Google Play store.

ironman07882,

@nixCraft
Absolutely not surprised. Google's push to ensure it can monetize the web experience is one of the reasons I use Firefox.

ngo,

@nixCraft

Could do with some serious action from EU on this.

SChau,
iam,

@nixCraft I know I know, this might sound controversial, but I either mute the audio or turn to CandyCrush or Homescapes when a long ads starts kicking in.

BogDrakonov,

@nixCraft Once ad blockers are genuinely impossible to use, ads will become utterly insufferable.

@nixCraft should be not used by anyone that is worried about this proposition, and pressure Chromium-based browsers to use webkit or Gecko.

seeteegee,

@nixCraft Not at all. Maybe it's time to move from the web to something much simpler? supertxt.net

kkarhan,
@kkarhan@mstdn.social avatar

@nixCraft The only valid move is to boycott that shit out of existance and refuse to open or use sites that implement it!

lumiworx,
@lumiworx@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft ... Until I know where this proposal is heading, I'll continue running locally on a physical box and use FF and DDG.

Google is NOT a standards body, and it is high time someone made that perfectly clear. The target to stop abuses is and has always been at the server/source, and never the client side.

If there's a gunman atop a tower shooting the crowd below, you don't pass out Kevlar vests to everyone on the street. Their whole proposal is ludicrous.

Everyone using Google Chrome or searches with them STOP DOING THAT NOW!!

@nixCraft Am I surprised that there is a scare story about the future? Not really. But Chromium is open source, so someone can and probably will fork it.
? ?

I swear eventually companies will be able to pay Google extra for ads that essentially brick the site for a person until they purchase whatever is being advertised

xs4me2,
@xs4me2@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft

Great, good reason to keep using Firefox!

dtwx,

@nixCraft seems like a win for adblockers to me!

rticks,
MichaelLeRoi,

@nixCraft The only surprise is that they didn't do it sooner.

ElBe_Plaq,

@nixCraft Will the website check if the ads are visible? Couldn't you check with some kind of token from Google Ads telling the website it's a real ad?

alantrapulionis,

@nixCraft Yeah. What a great use of resources. A genuine inspiration, they are.

aapis,

@nixCraft the difficult solution to this problem is to refuse to use services that show ads at all (YouTube, Google search, Netflix, any news org, etc). They believe they are necessary services and that the ad revenue business model is smart business. Show them what their MBAs are actually worth, stop logging in. Maybe we can call it a strike.
