If there are more guns than people in a country there is clearly something wrong.

Take an example from the Dutch, we have more bicycles than people.

geekgyrl,
@geekgyrl@masto.ai avatar

@stux For all my dad's chest-beating over needing guns, not a single one he owns made a God damned difference when he slept through being robbed. They cleaned out the garage. They came into the house and helped themselves to a bunch of stuff, which they loaded into his brand new SUV that sat in said garage before driving away.

And yet, he was still he he yet he'd catch the next one who tried. SMH

And don't get him startered on the libs coming to steal them. And I'm like...

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@geekgyrl :blobcatgiggle: But even if so...

Imagine..

Killing someone or multiple people because they steal something.. 🤔

In my book that's still murder!

EVEN if they are in your house etc, there are much better options rather than instant going for killing

geekgyrl,
@geekgyrl@masto.ai avatar

@stux There is a reason I don't talk to my parents anymore. I could list the reasons, but it would take several posts with a very heavy CW.

In short, my parents are paranoid, bigoted, racist, Christo-fascists.

The fact that I am none of these things is a fucking miracle because they've always been an evil, ugly people. I could leave home quick enough.

He's openly stated that he supports killing certain people. And it is as bad as you think.

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@stux @geekgyrl And if someone would steal your bicycle, the ratio of pricey vs. annoyance is quite decent (probably more annoying than pricy for most people, specially given how cheap you can get some bicycles), while for a car it's like "oh shit… there goes years of savings"

geekgyrl,
@geekgyrl@masto.ai avatar

@lanodan @stux Eh, a car being stolen is a minor annoyance for my dad. He could buy another one outright for cash without batting an eye.

But for the average person, it would have a huge financial impact.

birnim,

@stux So many questions about this hot take. Here are a few:

  1. Did having more bicycles prevent the Nazi Germany to invade? Did many bicycles help fight the Nazis?

  2. Did having more bicycles help against MH17 getting shot?

  3. Would having lots of bicycles save Ukraine from the full scale invasion?

  4. What you're gonna do with the bicycles when you end in a situation when there are more non-Dutch than Dutch? They'll just take all your bicycles.

@stux Hmm. This morning a wireless earphone fell into a pajama pocket, causing some reflection on the nr of pairs of "ears" I have:

Cheap wireless earbuds for bed only (too easy to lose)
Shokz OpenRun (wireless w band, uncomfortable lying down)
Noise cancelling headphones (for flights mainly; Bluetooth / wired)
Cheap wired earbuds, now needing USB-C adapter (for when batteries dead)

No chance yet of one pair to rule them all, but perhaps a pair over the ear models.... 😁

mrluo,

@stux

I like that. So when somebody experiences road rage, they can do a big squeaky brake, or maybe a wheely.

@stux why is it we never hear about all the mass bikings in the Netherlands? What is the press hiding? "Bikes don't ride places, people ride places. Using bikes."

In the U. S., we have more horses' asses than we have horses.

loafofbread,

@stux you can own more than one gun just like how you can own more than one bike. Though it is a problem.

@stux

There are a lot of Walter Mitty and/or John Wayne wannabes. And then there’s the type who either think they don’t need to know gun safety or just aren’t interested. And there are some who appear to view guns as toys instead of the deadly weapons they really are.
You don’t know whether the person carrying a gun in store or other public place in your vicinity is any different or safer than someone carrying a gun with actual intent to use it to harm people.

natriumchloride,

@stux off topic but what does one person need multiple bicycles for?

wonka,
@wonka@chaos.social avatar

@natriumchloride Cargo bike, racing bike for ideal roads, bike for rougher terrain, folding bike to take on the train... @stux

birnim,

@wonka @natriumchloride @stux also luxury bike because it's not possible to pick anybody for a weekend one night stand if you're driving a regular one? 😂

@stux Ehm, and kids with huge knives and other problems nowadays. Don't think we are so much better because everybody owns a bike 😉. It's better than let everybody own guns though.

chemoelectric,
@chemoelectric@masto.ai avatar

@stux But think of all the flat tires!

krs,

@stux don't get me wrong, I'm all for bicycles and greener ways of moving people around.

it's just that "bicycles in the netherlands" should never be used as a run-of-the-mill example to which one should aspire.

the NL famously is a flat country. of course biking is great there! most of us, though, have the misfortune to live in hilly areas. that NL example doesn't apply as well to us as one may think.

it's as good as asking us to stick our finger into a wall.

(bicycles still rule, though.)

    @Spellbind0127 I don't 😉

    Well, not really :blobcatgiggle:

    I use to be a mega USA fan and always wanted to move there. But since I run this server I've met a lot of people from the USA and i realised the EU is heaven compared to the US :catblush:

    TomSwirly,
    @TomSwirly@toot.community avatar

    @stux @Spellbind0127 Having spent decades in both places, Europe is far better, and I am back here now.

    New York City was pretty good for a long time. I never had to own a car, and I never missed it. Oh, the music scene.

    But the rest of the US, eh. And now NYC is a shadow of its former self, and viciously expensive (it was always expensive but now...)

    Yes! Eastern MA is just like France, with good food & beautiful people, who all despise each other.

    MetroWest is Austria & Bavaria, filled with money & assholes & a genetic predisposition to never change.

    Central MA is like Bulgaria. Don't expect much of it & you won't be disappointed.

    Western MA is Denmark, lots of well-educated farmers.

    The Berkshires is Finland, fiercely independent but constantly under threat of annexation by New York.

    weilawei,

    @nuncio @stux @Spellbind0127 MA labor laws are terrible. The state is pretty nice, but don't overhype it.

    At will employment, fire for any reason; they walked back how many hours they have to pay you for dragging you in from 4 to 3; health care is virtually impossible to get at times if your employer doesn't offer it, and sometimes still impossible if the paperwork gets lost outside the window for applying (why is there a window?!); and on, and on.

    Things are going the wrong direction here.
