"The push to seize Russian sovereign assets reflects a shared desire to show Moscow that it would not be able to outlast western resolve to aid Ukraine, both economically and militarily"

Yes - and this is why Russians are struggling so hard against it

mrluo,

All wars impoverish people. Americans are stupid by thinking that it's OK to fund a war but not OK to pay for it, and that's what they think. These wars cost, and who pays for it? We do, the common folk.

I think if the US wants to fund wars in Gaza or Ukraine or anywhere else, they should fund them through an immediate war tax. Let's see how popular these wars are then.

OK, an immediate 5-10% war tax on corporations, even better. Do that. Pay as you play. Let's see how popular THAT is.

Better yet, if a war is that important, send your kids AND your money. Is it worth that?

Biden commits tens of billions at a time like it's candy. Who will pay for that? Us. Let's pay for it now. An immediate war tax. Let's see how popular that is.

mrluo,

@archliberal @anneapplebaum

Hmm, well according to BBC, "Congress appropriated more than $112bn (£92.47bn) in 2022 alone."

So if that's accurate, I'm guessing the amount of money the US has printed out of thin air for the war is closing in on 200 billion.

But let's not split hairs. Call me crazy, but that money would be much better spent on health care, housing, food assistance, or anything but war.

Stop tyranny? Democracy? Are you saying that democracy is not already broken in the US? Isn't the US well on its way to becoming a tyrannical state?

This is a bankers war. It has nothing to do with freedom, democracy, and all that happy horseshit. Sorry to bust your bubble.

The US govt. doesn't give a shit about its own people. Do you really think it cares for the plight of Ukranians?

Iiiiii don't know about that. I'm afraid it's leaning a little right. No doubt the last thing you wanted to hear.

mrluo,

@dgar

Wait, leaning right from this view. If I were standing on the other side, it'd be learning left. Regardless, it's leaning. I think.

I suppose if you could drill a hole from the top to the bottom at a perfect 90 degree angle with the drill bit not being exposed at any point, you could claim this post is non-political. Off course, that would depend on the size of the bit. Like, the one they used to get those miners out of the shaft in Chile, well then, good luck with that.

Anyway, now that I look at it, you're right. It's not leaning. Well done.

Holy shit. Univision, the nation's largest Spanish-language network, has decided to cancel ad-buys by the campaign in Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, & Florida after met with their executives last week. Our media continues to fail us. This is how our democracy dies.

A rock I randomly grabbed from the multiple rocks sitting in front of me. So there.

And here is the other side of my random rock, only because I know you were waiting for it.

You know that thing where you see something or someone and think you know what or who it is, then as you get closer, your perception and interpretation of reality changes? Like you think you see your friend Bob off in the distance, but as you get closer, you realize it was just a reflection of a fire hydrant?

I think every moment of our life is that. We're constantly recreating our reality, every millisecond.

Perhaps there is no objective reality, something separate from us. Rather, perhaps we create ourselves every millisecond, creating our separate identity. Maybe we are creating our own illusion.

Or maybe I just did too much acid in the 70's.

Here you go. How dare people, especially young people, vote, says the GOP.

“You put very sexy things like abortion and marijuana on the ballot, and a lot of young people come out and vote...pure democracies are not the way to run a country,” Santorum said.

“People infected multiple times with COVID-19 are more likely to develop Long Covid, and most NEVER fully recover from the condition. Those are just two findings of a comprehensive new 3-year research study” https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/998107

mrluo,

@just_a_frog @taylorlorenz

Agreed. It sort of reads just, well, really unscientific.

Also, particularly for people over 60, does anyone really ever recover fully from any severe illness? I mean 100%? And with rapid aging, how would one even measure recovery? Because to recover would not mean to be in the same health as you were before the illness, because you've aged, so your health would have degraded anyway.

Too much click bait in our world.

mrluo,

@VeryBadLlama

People can't afford homes because their currency is being devalued by fiat creation faster than their fiat earnings are increasing, and war is going to exacerbate that because the Man will create even more money for the wars. Be prepared to be even poorer.
