Mac users: what are you all using for ad blocking? Shocking confession: I haven’t really used one since SetApp got rid of AdGuard last year for its supposed Russian connections. As I recall, the software they offered in its place, AdLock, demanded a level of permissions that I wasn’t comfortable with. But man, I’m sick of the ads. I’ve tried subscribing to rules in LittleSnitch, but they end up blocking so many links I keep ending up turning it off and forgetting to turn it on again.

@misc nothing is perfect, but uBlock Origin on Firefox works pretty well

VacantInside,

@misc I was using my Firewalla to block them at the network level but it broke. Note happily using an old Raspberry Pi as pi-hole successfully

@misc Since there’s no uBO, I like Wipr on Safari.

Obviously not a Mac user but have you tried Brave? Chromium based but pretty decent on adblocking

@misc Adguard + StoptheMadness + 'Vinegar' + Hush makes Safari browsing quite pleasant. Otherwise, Ublock Origin on Chrome does it all

p.s. I’m using Safari but open to trying Arc (or maybe Orion) so I could use Chrome extensions. I guess I could try Firefox too.

@misc I was still using adguard. I guess I need a new one now

@CoolerPseudonym I got the sense that the AdGuard Russia connection may have been some Spring 2022 panic stuff, and overblown

@misc That’s good

@misc I use AdGuard on my Mac with Safari, works like a charm. It’s slightly more involved than a browser extension and requires a bit of setup. I just went with the defaults and it’s been a peach.

twwilliams,

@misc I use uBlock Origin in Chrome. I don't use anything at the OS level since I only see ads in the browser.

@misc honestly at this point I'm about half convinced to go through the trouble to set up a pi hole

@misc i just have ublock origin in browsers. no systemwide ad blocking. little snitch mostly for apps calling home, not ads.

@misc I’m in a similar boat. I haven’t used one in a while and just haven’t gotten back to it. Maybe switching to for search inadvertently solved a lot of my ad issues because now I never see any search ads. Most of my time on my Mac is also now within non-Safari apps 🤷 . But if you find one that works out let me know.

gabek,

@misc I've been using the built-in ad blocking in Brave for a few years. I recently switched to Firefox and have been using uBlock Origin since then.

@misc When I had a Mac, I used AdBlock and never had any issues with it.
