Not a fan of .

Please don't twitterize Mastodon.

P.S. Looks to be a per-user opt-in option. That is the right way to do things.

@ianthetechie @RL_Dane Security through obscurity, I guess...?

@dheadshot @RL_Dane I don’t quite understand arguments for mastodon vs other sites that involve data privacy or AI training on your info. The way mastodon is designed is to be open. You can unlist your posts or set your account to manually approve followers and make it followers only but this is barely going to do much. Also server admins can see everything and there is no end to end encryption. Sending a postcard through the mail is probably more private TBH.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@ianthetechie @dheadshot

That's different though. I want my posts to be visible for those who happen upon them organically.

I do not want my posts to be searchable for those looking to pick a fight.

That's my problem with search. People will use search terms to find someone to argue with. That's why I use hashtags very purposefully.

    @ianthetechie @RL_Dane @dheadshot you'll understand when you get your runins with the reply guys that don't agree with you, I promise you it's no fun.

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @sotolf @ianthetechie @dheadshot

    THIS.

    The thing is, why have to deal with "finding" these guys and blocking them when you can just make your posts un-searchable instead?

    I just don't see the huge need for universal search. We already have it, it's called hashtags.

    grump();

    ericjmorey,
    @ericjmorey@fosstodon.org avatar

    @RL_Dane

    It's also for public toots only. So this reply wouldn't be indexed even if I had opted in.

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @ericjmorey

    Still, it's good to be able to opt out, even for public toots, because there's going to be some times I want the "public" to see something, but not necessarily those searching for a particular keyword.

    @RL_Dane What’s the controversy here? Why wouldn’t you want searchability? On the other hand it was awful on Twitter too. “Oh there was that neat link to a blog post” meant searching my browser history, not Twitter… lol

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @slembcke

    Easy to demonstrate.

    Make a political post that is critical of a political entity.

    Use hashtags extremely liberally so that your toot will be found by those who disagree with you.

    Enjoy the conversation.

    That is why I don't want to be searchable.

    slembcke,
    @slembcke@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @RL_Dane Hrm. Ok, I could see that. I mostly use Mastodon (and Twitter in the past) as a forum to talk to other game devs. Though obviously I interact with FOSS-tootin' Texans too. ;)

    (Imagine someone saying that with a Minnesotan accent. You're welcome.)

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @slembcke

    Slightly broke my brain, lol. Imagining a guy with a cowboy hat and wearing flannel suddenly open his mouth and with a nasally voice, say, "Well, ya know, we like FOSS down here in Texas too, ya know, gosh darn it! Want some lutefisk?"

    slembcke,
    @slembcke@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @RL_Dane Woah woah woah! You don't just casually offer someone lutefisk in these parts. It's gotta be for a holiday or a church dinner. Though all the church dinners have failed to come back since covid... :(

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @slembcke

    Aw, that stinks.

    Another "reason" to move to Texas, people here think Covid is "over." lol

    Going to church in Texas is such cognitive dissonance.

    Conversations here usually contain the following:

    • witty repartee
    • earnest well-wishing and prayer requests
    • humorous anecdotes
    • warm heart-level connection
    • occasional batshit fox-news talking points

    :facepalm:

    It is so dead simple you wouldn't believe. I love love love it, as a hoster.

    ianthetechie,
    @ianthetechie@fosstodon.org avatar

    @sirber @RL_Dane it is ;) if I move to self host later, I will almsot definitely go for Pleroma. Mastodon (the server software suite) is not exactly designed to be light or even super efficient.

    As to the ES dependency question, it’s because ES is much better suited to this sort of thing. It’s designed to do efficient full text searching at scale. Postgres optimizes for other things. It does technically have the ability to do FTS but it’s not nearly as good at scale.

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @ianthetechie @sirber

    What about GotoSocial? That should be stupid easy to self-host.

    By default, yes. I believe it can use an external database if you need to scale it up. @benjaminhollon has implemented a server recently, so you can ask him for more details.

    Benjamin: Man, bud, I hate having to remember your instance name now, lol. Just a silly complaint, don't take it seriously.

    benjaminhollon,
    @benjaminhollon@lowkey.zone avatar

    @RL_Dane @sirber @ianthetechie

    It supports either SQLite or PostgreSQL. They recommend PostgreSQL for multi-user instances, but I’ve been fine with SQLite on my test instance.

    One thing to note is it’s not really possible to switch once you set it up, so if you anticipate needing PostgreSQL, go ahead and use it from the beginning.

    @sirber @dheadshot

    I wouldn't do it for a Lincoln (say, who's on the Canadian $5??)

    The thing is, I use (and I dare say I use them WELL) very much on purpose so that my toots can be found for people with an interest in them.

    When I do NOT want my toots to be found, then I don't use a hashtag.

    That way, I can say that I think all American Republicans gargle toilet water, and no Inbred Jed comes looking for a fight.

    THAT is the whole point. XD

    benjaminhollon,
    @benjaminhollon@lowkey.zone avatar

    @RL_Dane @sirber @dheadshot
    Yeah, moving to smaller instances I've realized that I was being spoiled by ElasticSearch. I'm probably gonna start using more tags too.

    christopher,

    So, you use hashtags as a privacy mechanism?

    royal,
    @royal@theres.life avatar

    @christopher I read this as, hashtags as a statement of intent, toot by toot.

    RL_Dane,
    @RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

    @royal @christopher

    I use hashtags when I want random people to find my toot.

    I don't when I only want people who are following me or reading the local timeline (or reading the federated timeline and are very lucky) to find my toot.
