I really ought to have a bio, but I never know what to write. You can probably get a feel for who I am by just reading a few of my toots TBH.

Overheard today someone referring to the cybertruck as an Elon P76 and it just tickled my slightly obscure Australian motoring history gland.

@RL_Dane @NanoRaptor Big, heavy American cars have been known as "Yank Tanks" here for decades, so "WankerPanzer" is fitting as a term...

Project64 at school. I'd seen people use various MegaDrive emulators before then, but that was the first emulator I used myself. Diddy Kong Racing was my favourite.

I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

@sundogplanets I wonder if Boeing had something to do with that?

I just could never quite get used to it. I was always having to do the math in my head.

@RL_Dane I use both all the time (I have to living in the UK). Practice helps.

Great, the new captcha involves looking for a combination of numbered and dotted 6-sided dice that total to a number given.

Now I'm actually having to THINK to solve captchas.

If they start using differential equations in captchas, I'm sunk.

Today I learned that LinkedIn has a 'medium-style' blog platform. Who knew!? So I wrote an article to try it out. It works 🤷

simone is a fledgling Open-Source tool for repurposing YouTube videos as blog posts. I tried it out over my morning coffee. What do you think?

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/do-you-know-simone-alan-pope-p9cre

dheadshot,
@dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

@popey Instead of using LLMs, wouldn't it be better to just use the autogenerated YouTube subtitles?

dheadshot,
@dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

@popey LLMs have a high power usage. If YouTube's AI captioner has already done the work, why do it again?

It is? I thought Passover was next week - that's the only religion I think has a thing around now? According to a search, I see it's an important date for the far right though (Hitler's birthday), but you don't strike me as one of them though?

You know what would be awesome?

A service for the web that renders web pages for you on a server, caches ones that are polled frequently, and presents you with just the useful static elements of the page and no privacy invasion.
Think of shells dot com, but just for the browser, and streaming either something like SVG/PDF or a very sanitized HTML+CSS.

It would be great for casual browsing and web searches where you're just looking for INFORMATION, not an obnoxious web app.

dheadshot,
@dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

@RL_Dane frogfind and wallabag do similar things?

dheadshot,

I realized recently that my phone typing accuracy goes way up if I hold the phone lower down, giving my thumbs more space to hit the space bar accurately (because nothing I've used so far is particularly good at recognizing something like "goingbhome" as "going home").

The only problem is the center of gravity of the phone is mostly out of my hands at that point.

Phone cases really need "wings" like game controllers have. Foldable ones would be groovy.

dheadshot,
@dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

@RL_Dane Phones just need to return to their circa 2016 size, so they can be held and typed on by the same hand if you want...

dheadshot,
@dheadshot@mastodon.social avatar

@RL_Dane 2016, not 2012. 2016 was 5-5.5" screens, meaning around 6" phones.
