Life is truly a journey. Mine began in Bakersfield, California, but three months later took me to northern Afghanistan 🇦🇫. I took the scenic route through India 🇮🇳 and Malaysia 🇲🇾, and am currently braving a four-year foray through higher education at Texas A&M University, studying Communication and Professional Writing. Along the way I've learned musicmaking, storytelling, the art of performance, and technological mastery.

Wanna see where my journey takes me next?

One year ago today, we had to close submissions due to "AI" spam. We've long since reopened, but it continues to be a problem for us. Even with the countermeasures we've developed, it is still eating up a significant amount of my time.

Dang, was that a year ago already? Wow, time flies.

So far, https://tty1.blog has largely been tutorials on how to use particular commands or workflows. I'll keep doing that, but I also want to highlight some real-world problems that can easily be solved with some knowledge of shell scripting and the command line.

To start off, here's how I used the find command to create a script for @nantucketebooks to help them easily update the code for all of their books at once.

Hmm, having trouble connecting that with "dd"…

We're still trying to close the gap left by Amazon killing subscriptions. It's also our 10th anniversary of being on Patreon. If you are looking for someplace to support us, it's a good one.

Gonna stick with Weightless Books for now at least, but good luck! Hope you can close that gap well!

All mobile web browsers are a bit crap. It's just a matter of finding the one that's slightly less crap than the others.

What are people using on Android these days?

if only iOS actually gave a choice

it's all safari under the hood

Really? My understanding is that it's an app store policy, not a technical issue to be surmounted.

This week, I’m sharing a project of mine from one of my classes, “New Media and the Independent Voice”. The result is field audio recordings from Texas A&M’s Memorial Student Center, accompanied by narration by me.

I’m really proud of how this turned out, I hope you enjoy it!

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@lowkey.zone avatar

@adamsdesk

I recorded it while sitting on the floor of my closet so the clothes would absorb background sound, my laptop with the script and my microphone (which is actually fairly high-quality). :)

Yeah white noise is tricky. I had none in my own narration, but since I was overlaying all of that with a field recording, that was trickier. I'll see what I can do in the future.

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@lowkey.zone avatar

@adamsdesk
Good to hear! Yeah those recordings were pretty impromptu. In the future I'd like to mess with the settings on my microphone a bit to see if I can cut out some of that background right off the bat. Probably have my headphones in and listening to it as I do that; this time I just thought "oh right I need to record something, I'll take my microphone out and start it recording".

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@lowkey.zone avatar

@adamsdesk

As for the makeshift studio… yup! This was one of the strategies my prof mentioned as an option, and it worked pretty well! Another option, though: my uni provides no-extra-cost "whisper rooms" you can reserve that have professional-grade recording setups. I might try that, too.

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@lowkey.zone avatar

@adamsdesk
Yeah, it's a cool concept! I don't know what availability is like, but it is right nearby my dorm (a ~7 minute bike), at the library, so would be nice and convenient.

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@lowkey.zone avatar

@adamsdesk
Hmm, I wouldn't be surprised if my microphone has something like that built-in. I really need to reread its manual, it's been years.

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@lowkey.zone avatar

@adamsdesk
Oh neat, there's a "pre-recording" feature to keep a two-second buffer in case you start the recording right after the event you're trying to capture.

benjaminhollon,
@benjaminhollon@lowkey.zone avatar

@adamsdesk
Oh I see now, looking up what a Nose Gate is. Yeah, my microphone abbreviates it as a "LoCut" to remove low-frequency noises.

I mean for just text and ebooks I could see 8GB being fine, but you've gotta save the graphics of any marks that can be made, I'd assume. I don't know how much that takes up but it could be a contributor to storage space.

New blog post, in which I investigate ways of keeping text in SVG files consistent across browsers. https://nantucketebooks.com/blog/2023/09/2023-09-27_working_with_svgs,_and_new_books.html

benjaminhollon,

@adamsdesk @nantucketebooks
Heh, yes. You either embed the paths or you need to embed the font.

I don't embed a font in the SVG favicon for https://tty1.blog, though; sizing doesn't vary much, and the rest of the page is using your default monospace font so using that font matches well.
