Wow. I just learned that my instance is going to close. No shade on the administrator — stuff happens. I'll move.
But an instance outright shutting down really exposes the hazard in posts being left behind when you move. Unless I archive and rehost them, everything I've written here will be lost.

@interfluidity Yep, I had to do this for another account and it shows that the migration issue is not solved, far from it.
You also lose your identity and everything referring to it will be broken 🤦♂️ Plus the work of setting up a new account, bio, filters, announcing new presence etc. It is a big impediment that makes migration of an established account a last resort.
Rather than wasting time on search and other non-essentials this is the area @Gargron should focus on IMO.

I hear (but have not confirmed myself) that you can fairly easily move the contents of your timeline. Create an acount on the new instance, log in to the new account, and then boost all the (good) posts on your old timeline, in order from oldest to newest. This should have the effect of recreating your old timeline on the new instance.

Yet another example of why we need true #NomadicIdentity, like what Mike Macgirvin proposed 10-ish yrs ago for ActivityPub & subsequently built into #streams. (Just read a post about that but now can't put my hands on it.)
