seanmunger,

@timbray That article conveniently doesn't mention that Nostr is heavily intertwined with Truth Social and a haven for Trumpnuts, rightwing deplorables and crypto scammers.

@seanmunger @timbray how is Nostr intertwined with Truth Social? Truth Social is sadly more intertwined with the fediverse then anything, being that its running on modified Mastodon and Pleroma code...

seanmunger,

@liaizon @timbray Alex Gleason, the creator of Nostr, evidently created the source used by Truth Social (a Mastodon clone). He has a history of transphobia. Some creeps with Pepe avatars have been celebrating Nostr as a bridge that will integrate TS with the fediverse. I don't understand all the technical stuff, but when Pepes like someone, it generally can't be a good thing.

@timbray Bluesky was an official Twitter project before Musk, has anyone clarified whether they still have a controlling stake in it? Also, is no one else the slightest concerned that Jack seems intent on recreating the shitshow that Twitter was even before Musk? A “decentralized” network built on VC funding? No thanks.

@timswan Bluesky is an independent public-benefit (nonprofit). Jay Graber is its CEO. Jack Dorsey is on its board (don’t know who else is) but Jack has no relationship with Twitter. I was involved in a quite a bit of the Bluesky discussion last year and there was no input from any Twitter people at that time.

@timbray Thanks for the clarity!

@timbray @timswan I'm pretty leery of claims to be a "public-benefit" or "open" or whatever when it comes to tech and it's something like Bluesky or OpenAI. It's all very Trojan Horse and is very much like the GOP using "freedom" to sell Christofascism, not to mention good old fashioned marketing and category manipulation to have an appearance of being prosocial and to evade scrutiny. (See also Google choosing "don't be evil" when the founders very much knew they were going to need to be evil to make money due to their own research and published papers.)

amd,

@timbray @timswan PBLLC is a for profit company. See § 18-1202 (a)

They still have to make returns for their shareholders.

@timbray The article sort of glosses over what I think is one of BlueSky’s biggest failings, which is Jack’s idea of moderation is not removing bad stuff, but requiring users to have selective blindness and ignore the trolls and hate speech right next to them. I don’t think that will end well.

@timbray The idea that any of the topic labelling providers (there aren’t really any yet, are there?) can accurately label “hate speech” is laughable. Too many variants of “just asking questions”, dog whistles and coded speech make this impossible. And once you start allowing it, you’re back to the Nazi bar problem.

@timbray Neither seem like a compelling alternative to Mastodon yet, but I do like Bluesky's domain-based approach to names.

beans,

@timbray, the basic status quo is that all of humanity is in a rat race. Why congregate in a place so bleak? 😖

@timbray do you have any shareable opinions on the different platforms Tim?

@timbray

Bluesky seems underwhelming, even for a beta, and it doesn't even have a second server to at least demonstrate its decentralized feature of its AT Protocol.

And its use of DID and DID methods for its nomadic identity seems confusing.

@timbray But why? Closed source, crypto, still in beta, why? Already having problems, with a much smaller community, that Mastodon has (at least so far) managed to simulate solving.
