visited the museum of communism in prague and it was fun to see all the anti-communist tropes in one place, like how bad it was that the state built a lot of housing

@parismarx listen to them. They lived in those blocks. There is a reason why they hate the memories. Take it into account.

come from canada. visit czech republic. visit museum about communism, very likely curated by people who know communism by first hand experience. make fun about their opinions and shill for collectivism.

    RichBecker,

@parismarx The problem is they don't last.

@parismarx Interestingly, you posted it yesterday on the anniversary of the 1956 Budapest revolution against the USSR, that was swiftly stomped out by the use of tanks in 2 months (similarly to other revolutions in the Eastern Bloc).

I'm going to tell you, those revolutions, and also the people ditching the communist regime the second the USSR weakened wasn't because people were really getting tired of cheaply mass produced houses.

    czauner,

@parismarx Well, these block were abysmal. As you are in Prague, head over to Vienna. This City is know for it's housing.

One of the more famous one is btw Karl Marx Hof (Just ignore the Karl, and pretend it's named after you). This also happens to be one of the largest Rental-Buildings in the world (still, after 100 yes), without being an eye-sore.

@parismarx I always liked the idea of not optimizing for where i slept but for where i walked around in the day... so an austere apartment block with nice parks and walk/nice ways always seemed nice to me.

(I don't want to gloss over derelict apartments, but my point of view still stands)

@parismarx I hate to be that guy, but go to any place that was built this way and tell me if you want to live there.

    hoya,

@parismarx are you somehow glorifying soviet communism in Czechoslovakia, or am I reading this wrong?
Because if yes, you should learn a bit more about it before posting things like this.

@parismarx Please don't make one-sided assumptions based on a tourist trap in Prague city center (basically an amusement park). It would be silly and wrong. Nobody was angry with many new apartments built, even your photo doesn't say that. With most of blocks built in muddy, dysfunctional suburbs, destroying sane urbanism? Some were and still are unhappy. Quality and location varies. Hearing every word of all your neighbours? Maddening. Needing to corrupt to get such apartment? Don't miss that.

    minara,

@parismarx it was frightening that they built so many houses. I see.

@parismarx And the recent governments were not able to create an environment that would be able to build a fraction of it. If you want to beat the dog you always find a stick.

    kith,

@parismarx There was an awesome pop-up Museum of Capitalism in Oakland CA in 2019. Tropes are the same from either side of the fence.

    @parismarx two points.

    1. The problem of housing in most of the world, is not because of the quantity of available houses. Rather it is because a generation of people hoarded everything they could put their hands on, increased their price ten fold, and now use these assets as a sort of fixed income in their retirement, without adding any other values.
    2. In Iran there was a similar project around a decade ago. The quality was indeed shit. But more importantly ..

@yunchtime @parismarx That's not the same thing. One builds houses for people, the other for money (and that's why the big real estate developers in China are in trouble now).

But they all kinda looked the same. The horror 🙀🙀

Seriously, some people refuse to live in apartments because they are 'all the same'. Always crazy to me how marketing can lead people to great financial self-harm just to prove how 'unique' they are (unique in ways like 'smokes the same brand as this actor')
