Making a note of all the “expert” commentators who seem genuinely surprised at the resistance “AI” is getting from the public and regulators. You don’t have to agree with the reasons, but they’re generally obvious with a basic analysis. Anybody surprised probably isn’t worth much as an analyst

@baldur Same as calling anti-industrial exploitation Luddites anti-technology (they weren't).

The reason we don’t have a “Skyscanner for rail” is mostly NOT for technical reasons

It’s because rail firms don’t want to share data with each other

Example: Trenitalia doesn’t want to sell SNCF’s Milano-Paris tickets because it doesn’t want to, not because it can’t

UIC’s Open Sales and Distribution Model (OSDM) is a technical standard. At the margin helpful but rail firms can and almost certainly will still refuse to share data with each other

pettter,
@pettter@mastodon.acc.umu.se avatar

@jon Why though? And is there any regulation incoming to fix that? I know there's some trials going on here in Sweden on some ticketing stuff..

So…there is a concerted campaign, with Musk as its mouthpiece, to discredit Signal and get people to switch to Telegram. It’s disinformation, but there’s also useful information in it. The useful information is that a hideous, powerful, right-wing crank — or whoever’s yanking his chain — really, really wants people to use Telegram.

We’ve long known Telegram’s security is weak. But now, in light of this new information, we should move forward assuming that Telegram is actively compromised.

pettter,
@pettter@mastodon.acc.umu.se avatar

@inthehands I'd assume the same of Signal, to be honest. You're not safe and secure against a nation-state actor, especially not running software from that country communicating through servers run in that country.

The question is if you're worth them exposing that operation (you're probably not).

The Norwegian words for "some" and "someone" are not in the dictionary being used by Linux.

I don't know what that dictionary is called, or why no one has fixed this during all these years that dictionary has existed. But I have to say it's kinda crazy to me. Yes, I could of course have done the research to try and fix this myself, but there has to be someone who has created and others who have contributed to it before and already knows how to change it, and these are words you use all the time

pettter,
@pettter@mastodon.acc.umu.se avatar

@forteller Did a little bit of digging and possibly the norwegian wordlist comes from aspell, and if that's the case the last time anyone did absolutely anything about it was in 2002 or 2003.

@cyberlyra @academicchatter I've reported them to mastodon.social, and one could do the same at Facebook/Twitter if there was any chance of it having an impact...

As for getting them off the internet entirely, I think that might be a tricky one...

Broke the bike trailer coupler yesterday

It’s a German trailer - Croozer. And I’m in France currently. The only stockist of just this part I can find is in Freiburg 🇩🇪 and their online shop won’t send to 🇫🇷

That 🇪🇺 Single Market, eh?

So I’m going to try my luck with a Chinese generic one from Amazon instead 😡

Hint for federated Bandcamp alternatives: There are a lot of things that Bandcamp does, and while some of them are not super easy to self-host in practise, the one that is arguably the most tricky one is payment, especially international payments. If you want to compete with Bandcamp, that's going to need to be a high priority feature.

On privatisation, three decades ago, the water companies were passed to private investors debt free. Since then:

£78bn has been paid out in dividends

£64bn in debt has been taken o across the sector, and

£190bn has been spent on water infrastructure.... which given the current sewage & related crisis has been clearly inadequate!

Water firms across England want increases in bill of up to 70% in the next five years.

Like the railways, (re)nationalisation looks like the rational answer

pettter,
@pettter@mastodon.acc.umu.se avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 Well the rational answer is not really renationalisation, but renationalisation with a) demanding, on pain of prison, as much of the profits back as possible, b) the cancelling of unreasonable parts of the debt, as well as c) legal measures to prevent the re-privatization of important infrastructure

As you may remember from me talking about it once a week, the three things I most want out of a cell phone are

  1. RECTANGULAR screen with NO HOLES OR ROUNDED EDGES ON THE DISPLAY CANVAS

  2. Big bezel/bevel/whatever it's called so I can hold it without activating the touch screen

  3. Headphone jack

I search and search and even for high prices I usually cannot get these things

But the $35 carrier branded temp replacement phone I bought at the Wal-Mart by the airport?

All three

How can it be that the killing of white aid workers is now seen as a “turning point”? That newspapers are NOW saying “Enough” ? Like, it was all ok up to now - killing 40,000 people, systematic starvation, destroying virtually the whole of Gaza - but now it’s “Enough”? All of this so problematic.

But yes, of course I too hope that this is a turning point; that Western support for Israel’s war is waning.

Not that they will ever admit their complicity.

Reading about this xz backdoor story from the outside as a person who is still learning much about the technical ins and outs, but as a psychologist it is just overwhelming to imagine a maintainer in this position and all of the feelings of pressure and skill based identity and social isolation that must be involved.

Imho psychology has a duty to show up for technology practitioners and work for them just like we see and work for the well-being of emergency workers, healthcare providers.

https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/18/24104890/figma-ceo-dylan-field-cyberpunk-solarpunk-trends-sxsw-2024

Don't lose your bearings, don't get distracted, don't fall for the trinkets. "Solarpunk capitalism" is still capitalism.

Remember, it's more about the "punk" than the "Solar". Movement, not just aesthetic. Community as the protagonist.

Media attention comes and goes, it's up to us what remains. And we're all in this together.

pettter,
@pettter@mastodon.acc.umu.se avatar

@rysiek I dunno I kind of like cyberpunk as an aesthetic, but recognising that it's all plastic and thus Very Unsustainable is definitely enough to agree that it Should Go Away. @derek

pettter,
@pettter@mastodon.acc.umu.se avatar

@rysiek Yeah that's what I'm saying: in practical terms cyberpunk sucks in a lot of ways.

That all being said, I want to make sure to keep the element of Weirdness and Transgression that it contains. Solarpunk can far too often degenerate into essentially cottagecore.
