4 years to the day after George Floyd was murdered, here's where we are:

  • Racist people are just as racist as the day before George Floyd was murdered.

  • Black people are still asking for the exact same things.

  • "Liberal" and "Centrist" white Americans are more racist, and less supportive of DEI than they were the day before George Floyd.

  • Police budgets have grown faster than they did the day before George Floyd.

  • Biden has undone any of the gains made during the protests.

Politicians and political commentators whine about young people not buying homes and starting families (not getting married) and then do NOTHING to help the young people (who do exist) who would love to do one or more of these things but can't because it's too damn expensive.

Build housing and coops where young people want to live. Protect their jobs with unions. Make health care not an issue.

Do not make some marriages impossible because you don't like the genders.

Not rocket science.

@futurebird oddly, I think some of this could be ameliorated by addressing senior care at the same time as addressing infant/pre-school care. There's a symmetry that politicians like, the older base will vote for socializing the risk of draining their savings on long term care, and there's a cost streamlining opportunity bringing the programs to life together.

@BlackAzizAnansi in any political conversation make everyone say out loud that they're going to vote for Biden.
I found out later two guys who I thought got it had voted for Jill Stein and Gary Johnson.
They'd never vote for Trump but they didn't "like" Hillary.

Precious friends can start carping for him to step down for Kamala on January 22.

is at its lowest point in 8 months in the US. But one concerning trend is that our "low points" are getting less low. Lowest points each year based on wastewater monitoring:

2021: May: 40 copies/ml
2022: March: 111 copies/ml
2023: June: 165 copies/ml
2024 (thus far): April: 320 copies/ml

I remember being pretty young and asking my parents—is this it? We go to school every day and then we get a job and go to work every day and this is our lives, forever? Just living each day according to someone else’s schedule, at someone else’s command? This is life?

And they were pretty flummoxed. Yeah, they said, this is life. What did you expect? This is what you do and then you die.

These are the same people who showed my Koyaanisqatsi when I was like six and encouraged me to internalize its message that capitalist modernity is catastrophically, irrevocably broken and unsustainable.

And I just think…a lot of people hold pretty good beliefs in the abstract but it doesn’t occur to them to live as if they were actually true.
