Just unsubbed from a channel on YT because they did a negative review of a show I like, which is fine, but then also edited it into like a couple dozen shorts because YouTube be pushing shorts, so I'm basically getting hate for this show injected into my eyeballs every time I open up my subscriptions feed (cause you can't hide shorts anymore!) and it just felt really bad

S1dragon,

@eniko I've seen it on multiple channels. It's far from the worst thing shorts churns out but it is really annoying. I sympathize.

@eniko Shorts and video premiere announcements are a plague on the subscription feed.
If you could turn them off, whatever, but alas - you cannot. Of course you cannot, the enshittification is intentional.
sigh

@eniko The joys of short-form brain rot.

@eniko I've done similar.

What annoys me is when you find someone who does something like game reviews, and offers a lot of generally insightful thoughts on things like level and encounter design, etc. only to start pretty much every video off with some statement along the lines of "I played the game on hard, which is how everyone should play, and if you don't then what are you doing on my channel."

Just... a super disrespectful thing that hurts the actual value much of his other review holds.

@eniko Yeah fuck shorts. I keep seeing the little dot next to someone's name to say "there's a new video available", then I go to their vid page and there's nothing there!
The dot's there 'cause there's a new short, but fuck do I care about shorts?
I've got a browser extension to make shorts open like regular videos.
I would rather paint a rendition of my own dick on Google's HQ in thermite paste than get into shorts.

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@MachineLordZero oh thanks for clueing me into that existing. the shorts interface is obnoxious as fuck on desktop and completely breaks on my bedroom 720p tv

@eniko My hatred of this particular dystopia is not hidden.

@eniko There is one redeemable feature of the Arc browser (I don't like that it's Chromium-based) in that there is a boost feature that hides the Shorts section that pollutes the Subscriptions tab.

I found this snippet that you can add to a custom CSS file for your browser that might replicate the same effect:

.ytd-rich-shelf-renderer {display: none !important; visibility: hidden !important;}

Edited with correct CSS snippet

@eniko Granted, that doesn't work on non-browser apps. I hate the dark pattern of not allowing people to choose what they do or don't want to see.

I have the same loathing of seeing horror or suspense content on streaming services, especially if they are non-skippable pre-roll crap.

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@qlp oh yeah just scrolling along and suddenly LOUD SOUNDS, DISTRESSED SCREAMING

@oldmankris@mastodon.xyz avatar

@eniko I hate looking at my YT subscriptions now too, for the same reason. Everybody wants to turn their service into TikTok. I don't want TikTok.

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@oldmankris well also like, if i wanted tiktok i'd go on tiktok. i dont go to taco bell if i want a burger

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko I enjoy using just one platform for multiple types of content, but they really need better controls. I don't want shorts in most feeds and it's especially annoying because you basically HAVE to spam shorts thanks to the algorithm

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@SirTapTap yeah, i know that's why they're doing it but having to scroll past a list of shorts about "how that thing you like FUCKING SUCKS" just, bleh

SirTapTap,
@SirTapTap@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko yeah, I wish stuff could use The Glorious Algorithm to help hide stuff you don't want to see instead of just the opposite...but due to negative engagement still being engagement, most sites have no financial incentive to do so

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

Like I know it's not really their fault but it still feels like that guy you know who constantly has to remind you how he fucking hates that thing you like

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

Idk I guess my advice would be that if you hate something and you're a YTer and you made a review saying you hate it don't then edit that into 25 shorts about the various things you hate about it cause it's really off putting

cchowds,

@eniko Yes. 100% agree! I don’t need to hear how I’m enjoying something the wrong more than once. I know.

lisyarus,
@lisyarus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko It's ok to say you don't like something, but to continuously remind everyone of that and turning this hate into your whole personality is kinda gross

(ofc unless it's, like, the hate towards fascism or smth)

eniko,
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

@lisyarus i mean i get it though. YT rewards shorts and if you have a big episode you can cut that down into a bunch of shorts each of which will get lots of attention lavished on it by YT's algorithm cause YT is currently horny for shorts and the more you post the more chance of any one of em going viral. so like, YT is telling them to do this

but maybe its not the best idea when the thing in question is how you hate thing that some people like >_>

lisyarus,
@lisyarus@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko Yeah, exactly
