Industry reports state that negotiations will continue over the weekend.
I'm really happy that apparently "thousands" of #SAGAFTRA members signed an open letter to their negotiating team urging the team to not accept a "bad" #AMPTP deal. This is in stark contrast to the subset of high-profile members who had union leaders on a video call Thursday night to push for a "fast" resolution to this round.
Seems it's up to the #AMPTP at this point to offer a fair compromise regarding the use of #AI, which may the biggest obstacle to a #strike settlement with the #SAGAFTRA#union right now
Inch by inch, bit by bit (very punny*), #SAGAFTRA and #AMPTP#strike negotiations continue on, with meetings scheduled for Wednesday, and SAG-AFTRA asking members to congregate picketing outside #Disney#studios as that studio enters the first day it can begin negotiations with #Comcast regarding ownership of #Hulu.
*#AI may be the largest obstacle, though #compensation is also not fully resolved.
Like the steady drip of water carving out even the strongest of rocks, #SAGAFTRA in its staunch resolve seems to be eroding the seemingly impervious and unyielding #AMPTP as #strike negotiations appear to be nearing a mutually agreeable resolution.
"I don’t mind a parasite. I object to a cut-rate one."
Those #AMPTP parasites need to put a fair offer on the table, finally.
There's more than enough money for the #studios and #streamers to stay obscenely wealthy while paying and treating everyone else in the business fairly.
This may either be great news, meaning it's a good deal and the #strike will be over in the next week or so, or the absolute worst case scenario if it's rejected because negotiations likely won't resume until sometime in 2024.
If there's a "poison pill" (probably #AI), my bet would be the AMPTP is gambling they can break the #union.
"The #AMPTP is trying to capitalize on fatigue and harness pressure from the industry at large...to break our resolve and have you and your incredible negotiating committee accept whatever it is they’ve thrown at us...Their decision to use 'last best and final' language in their most recent counter proposal tips their hand and shows that they are relying on intimidation and not fairness to bring this #strike to an end." – #SAGAFTRA#union member #ZacharyQuinto
The #SAGAFTRA#union is carefully deliberating over the #AMPTP's "Last, Best, and Final Offer" to ensure it satisfies their demands and doesn't ultimately harm its members, especially those members who are most at risk from previous #studio and #streamers actions and proposals.
As below-the-line members and non-actor #businesses suffer the most they, along with wealthier #actor / #producers, are the ones most likely to push for a deal at nearly any cost at this point.
"This is about protection for all us...If we give ground now, we will lose ground forever." – #ZacharyQuinto
Background #actors and others need to realize that the way the #AMPTP#studios and #streamers will use #AI, if not restricted, will mean that nearly all of them will have literally one or two more jobs, ever, as actors.
The #SAGAFTRA#union continues to highlight AI as a key ongoing sticking point to resolving the #strike.
Ok. it's (also?) every #ScheduleF#actor who earns above the minimum for #tv or #film that the #AMPTP is targeting for #AI scanning and unrestricted use after an actor dies.
Yes, #GeorgeClooney, et al., they want to use you forever, without additional #compensation or approval once you're dead.
"The people who launched the campaign to take a deal — they’d be f—ked if we took this deal..."
The #SAGAFTRA#union is right in refusing to budge on this issue.
With so many issues raised by the use of #AI, and the rapid changes in this still new #technology, the #AMPTP need to drop their demands on this and end the #strike.
It's only three years until the next contract negotiations, and by then we should all have a much better sense of how best to use AI in ways that #SAGAFTRA, et al. can protect all of the members of its #union.
It really seems that the #AMPTP refuses to accept that their use of #AI, particularly in relation to actor's likenesses, is something that absolutely must be strictly limited and, ultimately, only done with appropriate permission, actor protection, and fair compensation.
