"GOP strategists urge congressional candidates to campaign against a national abortion ban"
"Disturbed by tough election losses on Tuesday, Republicans say the party needs to make clear to voters, in speeches and TV ads, that it doesn't favor banning all abortions."
Their idea: Say the GOP is for "reasonable limits on late-term abortions" as opposed to Dems' "taxpayer-funded abortion without limits.”🙄
Paraphrase: "Let's really scare people with the idea that there are no government limits on women's healthcare. And then let's scare them with the idea horrors that women who can't afford abortions should be able to get them."
As several staff at DailyKos.com have pointed out on multiple occasions, ABORTION IS MURDER! but we will pitch a 15 week ban as a reasonable compromise everyone can/should agree with...
@Teri_Kanefield
As women postpone starting their families, “late stage” before 20 weeks limits their choices. The amniocentesis cannot be performed before 16 weeks and it takes 4+ days to get the results.
Every time the prospect of no-limit abortion comes up (as it did last night) , we scoff: our medical contacts know of 0 abortions so-late as GOP scare their base with. It Does Not Happen. But, despite that it's not a thing, it clearly scares anti-abortion voters.
@Teri_Kanefield Many years ago a Republican intellectual, it could have been George Will before they were all branded as RINOs, wrote Republicans were quietly fine with the status quo keeping Roe intact because they could campaign against abortion but the abortion issue didn't much matter much to voters knowing SCOTUS would block any crazy anti abortion bills. Overturning Roe was like poking a stick in a hornets nest for R candidates in competitive districts.
Having known women with wanted pregnancies who had fetuses die in the third trimester and were unable to find an abortion in 3 states---when Roe was in effect---and also finding out that a late term abortion starts at $20k most places--I find this horribly offensive.
I hope someone who has been through late term disaster calls them on it. Too many couples have known that tragedy. :(
@Teri_Kanefield
I’d like to believe you’re right, but the Republican Party has a pretty good track record in getting people on board with obvious lies. How many people will tell you they are the party of fiscal responsibility? Of higher moral standards?
"Abortion, it's such a very good good wedge issue. My grandpa polarized and divided the poors with abortion, then my daddy used abortion and more poors tore each other's throats out then too. It's my turn to abortion the poors, only, the abortion it's not dividing the poors as well as it used to. Those wokes broke it!
@Teri_Kanefield People question why Republicans will not change their position on banning abortion. I think they’re stuck because of their funding sources (e.g., Leonard Leo, et al.). It may be political suicide for them to move away from those sources of extreme money.
@Teri_Kanefield This is exactly the strategy that Glenn Youngkin devised for Virginia Republicans - claim your position is moderate, and lie about the Dems to claim they're "extreme," and look how that turned out.
After Dobbs, no one believes any "compromise" is sincere. That's what they don't get. The details are or how it's packaged don't matter. They showed the world there isn't anything they'll settle for, it's always a lie to get to what they really want. There's no coming back from that.
@Teri_Kanefield it’s funny for decades they tried to get roe overturned, they finally got what they wanted. Turns out it’s one of the worst things that could have happened to them
@Teri_Kanefield ....the Dems are/ should be parlaying the elephant in the room that's so clear from these election results (esp in VA)....."you just can't trust anything Republicans say"......on abortion, law & order, tax cuts, trickle-down econ, delaying SCOTUS nominations, election security, voter access, and on & on. They lie to get votes, then do their thing. Can't trust anything they say.
@Teri_Kanefield The gop is a christo-fascist terrorist cabal. They denigrate women and are utterly devoid of any decency or true morality. Just like their "leader."
@Teri_Kanefield Would it not be the other way around? I think the GOP just has not listened to the results of elections. Too busy trying to blame others for all that is wrong, defame other party, and spread lies to pay attention to much in the real world.
@Teri_Kanefield Zero doctors will perform late-term abortions unless there's an urgent medical reason. Typical legislating for things that aren't really happening.
@Teri_Kanefield Women aren’t stupid, this isn’t 1984 and the Republican Party has long been pushing for a national abortion ban, they only started claiming it was up to the states so SCOTUS didn’t have to feel so dirty when they stripped away women’s rights.
