@pluralistic The issue I have with the current kvetching about our tech overlords is that so much rancor is aimed at the tech part and not so much at the overlord part.
Our society adores wealth and those who have it. Sociopathic behavior is taught, encouraged, and rewarded, as long as it involves making money. Is it all that surprising that the best at making money in America are the worst at being people?
These overlords are just the latest in celebrating a great American tradition.
@jwbates@pluralistic i’ve only been to a small part of the west coast for 3 months (i’m from germany) but i share this observation
it was quite the culture shock for me in general, seeing not just the indifference of the rich and powerful, but also what the atmosphere of constant precariousness, misery and hopelessness does to everyone else. it turns people against each other and breeds that typical “fuck you, got mine” mentality
It cultivates desperation, mistrust, and compassion fatigue that are then used to support the narrative that some people are not worth helping, that everyone is selfish and you have to take whatever you can grab, we don't have sufficient resources to be generous or helpful without risking our own survival, etc etc.
