One thing us developers can do for the environment: Write more efficient software!
You might save some electricity, thus making it easier to switch the grid fully over to renewables. But what really matters is for you not to be the reason your users buy new hardware!
Depending on how large your audience is and how green your other habits are, this might be the single biggest thing you can do! Probably not though.
balance to be found because some new hardware is dramatically more efficient, eg if you kept a computer 10 years, it would be insanely inefficient compared to the cutting edge.
certainly agree on efficient software at whatever hardware level people have.
@walter4096@alcinnz but then you need to account for the cost of building this new computer, which is usually a big part of the whole cost of it throughout its lifetime.
right thats definitely a factor.
it's skewed differently for mobiles vs desktops. I think deskops are something like 20% energy in manufacture, 80% in use.
"energy use" & prices aren't always the same, e.g. apple silicon macs are super energy efficient, but can cost quite a bit more than equivalent PCs
