Futurebird's Five State Challenge!

Before Feb 1, 24 make "real contact" with 5 people you already know from 5 different US states "at risk of not voting" and have a conversation with them about registering and voting.

As you get it done post the states you've hit on this thread. This could mean looking up old HS friends, ex-coworkers, distant family.

"real contact" means one of the following: a face to face conversation, a phone/video call or an interactive email or text conversation. 1/

"at risk of not voting" could mean they have moved recently, you have never heard them mention voting, or you know they are busy and might need encouragement, or simply you otherwise know they could use a reminder.

The purpose of this is to check that everyone we know of who could vote is registered. And to expand the buzz of anxiety and focus about this coming challenge.

We'll do it again as the dates get closer for the purpose of actually voting.

Can you do 5?

Who's "in" ? 2/2

One more optional rule:

Each time you get in an online political argument you need to do the challenge again. 5 more non-combative

"hey I can't stop thinking about this next election, we never really talked about politics much did we? Are you registered out there in --? Yeah you gotta check again they take people off the rolls sometimes it's crazy... etc."

Especially if the argument is an argument about voting. Those of you who ought to do this extra rule probably know who you are.

davidhaller,

@futurebird It‘s crazy that you Americans need to register at all. Here in Germany, everyone who is of legal age (18) is automatically registered by their municipality. You even get a letter announcing the upcoming election and explaining how to vote (postal voting or in person).

If I was US president, that would be my first topic. And second, the introduction of the metric unit system 😉

@davidhaller @futurebird Yeah, there is real opposition from at least one party to automatic voter registration, and making election day a holiday. 😬

Oh no. Feb snuck up on me. I guess I'm making phone calls today. I still need two more for my challenge.

Today is a Snow Day! I feel like I haven't had a snow day in a decade. I'm so happy.

NYCDOE wants "remote learning" today which is horrible. It's fine for the college kids but let snow days be snow days.

And it means I have no excuse not to get this challenge done.

I've done:

PA 3 people
CO 1 person

so far.

I hate making phone calls. If I do this ANYONE ought to be able to.

nomi,

@futurebird
Pro tip for making calls if you're not used to it.

Physically write a list of 5-10 names and numbers
Commit to calling them all before stopping
Acknowledge this is terrifying and will probably suck
Take a few deep breaths
Call them all back to back without break
Reflect on how it didn't end up sucking at all

Been using that method for years. Still terrified before each time, but it gets the job done

Virginicus,

@nomi @futurebird That’s the cure for what my old boss called “the 50-pound telephone.”
