Also also:

TTRPGs are the foundation of many hobbies, and "Fixing D&D" is one of those hobbies.

And I'm not joking. This is literally a specific activity from which people derive joy; many of them know about other systems, and are doing something they LIKE.

"Why do you like restoring old tractors? They're not even good at the job!"

ClawedQuinna,

@LeviKornelsen Person fixes dnd5e. Ends up making dnd4e.

But eh, even systems which work poorly can be fun to play.

Would be nice if more people expanded their horizons though, cause a lot of dnd5e overhauls are like... why no use a system which already does that better?
Idk. Ig i overall do not like dnd5e. Mainly from realizing the whole "this system is actually laser focused on dungeon crawls and expects quite strict encounter math, but doesn't bother to tell you that loudly enough"

sycarion,

@LeviKornelsen In semi-seriousness, though, we had limited access to old D&D growing up, so we were not fixing D&D as much as creating a Frankenstein's Monster D&D. We had some OD&D Resources, both Red boxes, Moldvay Blue box, Mentzer Companion box, no Masters box, 1e PHB, DMG, MM, MM2, OA, and Spelljammer. We had Boot Hill and Top Secret SI mixed in with it, too.

In the view of some, I believe we made D&D more broken. :)

  • sycarion,

@LeviKornelsen oh yeah, I agree. Not everyone is good at it. My friends and I weren't necessarily trying to be good at it. I bolted on Battletech into a campaign to kill the Tarrasque.

Sorry, your post about fixing D&D just made me think about how much fun we had and the crazy talks about how much damage a PPC would do and how to handle characters from the boxes or the book.

    sycarion,

@LeviKornelsen Forgive me for the tangent, but when I see "also also", I will always respond with a Monty Python quote.

    "Alsø alsø wik"

@LeviKornelsen basically at least half the OSR

    jquestionmark,

@LeviKornelsen I'm not a big D&D/d20 fan, but as my big nostalgia system that I'm always happy to run things in (with liberal amounts of house rules I've spent ages developing) is significantly less mechanically sound than most d20 stuff, I'm feeling very called out by this, haha.

@LeviKornelsen i feel slightly called out

    Opiyel,

@LeviKornelsen I won't lie, that's a good analogy. Like working on a rat rod, or retro computers.
