As I understand it, Meta has a phased rollout plan regarding ActivityPub. Its efforts today are little more than effectively reposting a few Threads accounts to ActivityPub, but it will start adding features for tighter integration throughout the course of next year. https://www.threads.net/@zuck/post/C0zXcQmxO77/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D

@mmasnick TBH, that's how I'd test it. Cautiously optimistic. If Activitypub becomes Just How Shit Gets Made like SMTP and RSS, that's a win even if most people stay on Threads/big social crap

And if they can follow me here without me having to touch threads, hey, that's nice. That's what I like about Misskey. Should be the standard.

Now Tumblr get your shit together.

@mmasnick lol long way to go because clicking that link leads to a blank logo page if you don’t have a meta account

@profcarroll @mmasnick I was able to see the Threads link in many different browsers not logged in to Threads or any other Meta service. Perhaps when you looked there was a short-lived issue?

@fisherstudio the initial test (starting today) will be that some threads content will be available on ActivityPub (just to follow). So it's basically just account replication for now. Other features will roll out next year.

@mmasnick Thanks. I don't use Instagram so while I may want to favourite posts by people I would follow in the Fediverse, I won't leave Mastodon to do so.

Account replication sounds like a bot reposting content without any interaction options. Is that right?

mmasnick,
@mmasnick@mastodon.social avatar

@Kay initially yes, but early next year they say they plan to start integration actual interactions between threads and the fediverse, starting with passing back info on likes / boosts and eventually to full on replies etc.

@mmasnick Unfortunately, it looks like mastodon(.)social and associated instances have defederated Threads already, so we're unlikely to experience Threads through ActivityPub. I wonder if we'll see people migrating toward instances that have not defederated so they can follow folks on Threads.

List of instances that have defederated Threads here: https://fedipact.veganism.social/

mmasnick,

@pollak mstdn.social but not mastodon.social.

LiveOutLoud,

@mmasnick i am pretty new to fediverse so maybe this has been hashed out in way too much detail at an earlier time, but can anyone summarize what are the main concerns of the fediverse folks who are clearly not looking forward to threads/Big-Zuck integrating with ActivityPub?

mmasnick,
@mmasnick@mastodon.social avatar

@LiveOutLoud it's the usual "Embrace/Extend/Extinguish" concept, that once Meta is the whale in the pond, it'll end up eating all the fish...

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@mmasnick it's almost as if a careful, measured rollout is a smarter way to do things than feature by capricious fiat!

janxdevil,
@janxdevil@sfba.social avatar

@mmasnick When do they plan to support automatic account migration from Threads to other ActivityPub instances. Is that on their roadmap. Does anyone care?

mmasnick,
@mmasnick@mastodon.social avatar

@janxdevil they have been vocal that they absolutely plan to support that. Indeed, it seems central to some of what they've talked about.

@kommaKucken @janxdevil yeah. i attended that dialogue that person wrote about, though their framing of it... is horribly confused and misleading.

janxdevil,
@janxdevil@sfba.social avatar

@mmasnick When do they plan to support it? What have they prioritized below it?

mmasnick,
@mmasnick@mastodon.social avatar

@janxdevil they have a road map over the next year or so.

monorailtimes,
@monorailtimes@worldkey.io avatar

@mmasnick any idea which accounts work at the moment?

mmasnick,
@mmasnick@mastodon.social avatar

@monorailtimes my understanding is that it's just going to start with a few Meta employees. I'd guess Adam Mosseri would be the first, but I don't know for sure.
