Pro tip: setting up a 1 : 1 online meeting with yourself is one of the simplest ways to prevent your status from being set to “away” (assuming that your organization tracks that kind of thing for its employees)
@evan@SomeGadgetGuy Another, equally simple technique to evade the hey kid are you goofing off? police is to run any random powerpoint presentation in the background. my personal preferred approach, works best when you have multiple monitors. shhh… don’t tell the thought police.
@kmmfoo@evan oh that's a good one.
I've usually gotten away with business calls by saying things like "just taking notes". But an active running presentation could work better.
@evan I am immediately multitasking on most calls because there is not enough productive time to do things, and most video conferences are not productive.
@evan I chose 50 because I'm risk-averse; otherwise it might be closer to 10.
I think it depends on other factors though like what the meeting's about and what I'm expected to take out of it, so the "10" and "50" is just my way of guessing that, not knowing any other context, if there are that many people there, it's probably not that relevant to me 📏
@evan Just as @johannab said, it doesn't (for me) depend on how many people are in the meeting.
If it's not something I need to pay attention to then (a) it shouldn't really include me, but often that's not for me to decide, and (b) I'm multi tasking.
If it's something I need to pay attention to, I will.
Doesn't have anything to do with number of people in the meeting, AFAICT.
@bignose@evan@johannab hmm, I'd agree for the most part but I'd say how I do it and what I'm working on while multitasking does depend on the meeting size. This is maybe a function of working in teams where it's perfectly acceptable to say "I don't need to be here" and leave the meeting. So if I'm in a meeting of up to 10 people then I'm there for a reason, and I'd consider it rude or simply unproductive to stay in the meeting if I really have better things to do.
@bignose@evan@johannab Like, it's probably only in meetings of 20+ people when I'd do work where I completely ignore what's going on in the meeting, and maybe turn off my camera so nobody can tell I'm not engaged at that moment.
